I never imagined I would be starting over without family, without a safe home, and while battling cancer. For years, I was a caregiver for my mother and father, a proud WWII Marine veteran, and later for my brother, an Air Force veteran. I have lost them all, and my immediate family is now gone. While grieving, life delivered blow after blow. I have lived in my family home since I was 11, but the county unexpectedly quadrupled my property taxes, putting my home at risk. Then my health collapsed. I was diagnosed with cancer and underwent a total laparoscopic hysterectomy. After recovering, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, just days before Hurricanes Helene and Milton struck. Helene brought five feet of water, taking everything I owned. My home was completely gutted and remains unlivable a year and a half later. During Idaliah in 2023, FEMA was supposed to assist with flood insurance for three years, but never paid for it. The limited funds I received were far below what was needed and were stolen by a criminal contractor who preyed on devastated homeowners in our area. Now, turning 65 and facing additional surgery and serious medical conditions, I am trying to survive on a limited income. I spent many years caring for others—my mother, my father, my brother—and now I find myself completely alone and in desperate need of help. I have endured an extraordinary amount of loss and am asking for support to rebuild my home and life. Restoring my home would allow me to get back to a ground floor level and not have to climb stairs, which is difficult with my medical conditions. I could finally have a kitchen, appliances, and furniture again, and return to the comfort and memories of my family home. It would mean regaining stability, independence, and the support of my caring neighbors. Every donation brings me one step closer to safety, healing, and stability.
