Hi! We’re Jodi and Liz, a trans lesbian couple living in Texas. We hope to eventually find work as artists—screenwriting and music, respectively—but right now, we both work other jobs.
Like a lot of queer people, we’re having a difficult time of it. We have been in constant financial struggle for the past several years, both of us stuck working part-time. Furthermore, Liz has a chronic pain condition and her mom, Tina, is severely chronically ill and has been bedridden for years now. We have very little in the way of a local community, so we’ve had to support ourselves as best we can.
Last year, we resolved to move to Colorado. We have friends and family there and the climate is much better for Liz and Tina. However, saving up for such a big move has been completely impossible. Recently, we received notice that we have an income recertification for our apartment at the end of July—if we no longer qualify, we may lose our apartment within 60 days. It may be now or never.
All we want to do is live good lives and achieve our dreams. Getting out of Texas and reaching our loved ones in Colorado would do wonders for that goal.
Our donation goal is based on some very rough cost estimates. These are:
- $400: plane tickets. This would let us visit the city and tour potential housing.
- $1000: cost of a large Uhaul truck.
- $2000: car repairs. Our car has a laundry list of issues that should be fixed before a cross-country trip. This is likely a conservative estimate.
- $5000: two months’ rent and security deposit, based on the average cost of apartments in our price range.
- $4000+: groceries and other essentials. This will let us stay on our feet while we search for jobs in the area.
Depending on the results of our recertification meeting, some funds may be redirected to financial support for finding some short-term housing in Texas.
