Help Jocelyn's Rehab Recovery After Stroke

Donation protected

One Tuesday evening on March 9, 2021, my brother Jocelyn Jean was doing what he loves and does best which is coaching and inspiring a bodybuilding competitor how to pose for the upcoming contest in 4 days. He never imagined at 49 years old that he was going to be rushed to the hospital that night. The phone calls went out to our family and with disbelief we waited for answers from Boca Regional hospital emergency room providers. That’s when they told us Jocelyn had suffered from a hemorrhagic stroke on his right sight which left him with no feeling on his left arm and leg. We were informed the next morning that they would have to perform surgery on his brain to remove the blood and decrease ocular pressure. We were blessed that the surgery was a success and that Jocelyn regained consciousness and could speak. After speaking to countless medical professionals, surgeons, neurologist, and cardiologist the message was clear that we are blessed that Jocelyn is still alive, but he would never be 100% back to all the same activities as a bodybuilder. The main thing is that this will be a long road to recovery and what we do in the next 6 months will have long lasting effects on the success of his recovery.

Another huge blow as a result of his stroke is the high cost of the medical care he has received so far and how much it will cost to continue to take care of him. Even with insurance Jocelyn has already received $80,000 bill from the hospital and still waiting on additional facility cost from rehab. Due to insurance limitations, Jocelyn will not be able to continue his recovery at a rehab facility and will be discharged home. This will significantly set his recovery back because right now he is receiving 3 different types of therapies 5 times a week. When he is sent home, the insurance will not cover more the 35 sessions for the whole calendar year plus the cost of copay. So that means maybe receiving therapy twice a week. The only way to receive the mich needed therapy, we will have pay out of pocket for therapy which is not feasible for us to do with out monetary assistance.

Jocelyn is like so many hardworking middle class Americans who isn’t approved for government financial assistance because he own’s his own home and not below poverty level but doesn’t make enough to have saved over $100,000 to pay for his care. I have calculated the amount needed in order to have a nurse assistant visit him for even 4 hours a day and pay for Speech, Occupational, and Physical therapy 3 times a week (which is 12 sessions), including his insurance will cost at least $5000 a month. In addition, Jocelyn is no longer working to cover the expenses of owning his home or car.

Jocelyn is a small business owner of Actyvme Gym and Meals in Boca Raton, Florida. He is an author of Parenting Athletes (available for purchase at his gym and Amazon). He is a father of his only son Brandon Jean. He has dedicated his life in taking care of himself to be healthy and to motivate others to do the same. As a trainer he not only motivate others but he has also been supportive of his clients, family, and friends with achieving their dreams. Now it’s time for him to receive help to get him back on his feet and live his life managing his new normal.
