Help JL Battle A Wicked Foe

Donation protected
As many of you know, my cousin's wife, JL McDaniel-Milliken, is an absolute warrior. She has battled aggressive breast cancer for the better part of the last two years, and after a period of relief this past summer, she is now battling a second round.

While the news has been challenging for her and her family, she continues to tackle the cancer head-on. As the calendar year has flipped to 2019, so too have requirements for deductibles, and a few of us are banding together to offer some assistance.

As you begin to think about the new year, please consider some help for JL, Andy, and their daughter, Alice. Any amount is appreciated, and we are aiming to raise a total of $5,000 to help them in their fight against this horrible disease.

Please see below for the full story from my cousin, Andy McDaniel-Milliken. Again, please consider a donation, and help us help JL and her family in their ongoing battle.

From Andy:

In February 2017, my wife, JL McDaniel-Milliken, was diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer: she had normal test results in a mammogram in December 2016, only to be informed of having Stage 2 breast cancer by February 2017 that would progress to Stage 3 by the start of her chemotherapy in March. From March 2017-December 2017 she went through chemotherapy, a mastectomy, and radiation. Due to complications from the radiation and an infection she had two additional surgeries in January and February of 2018.

In July 2018, she received a clean bill of health based on blood work. However, through a prolonged discovery phase in October-November 2018 that included an ER and hospital stay due to low hemoglobin, it was determined that the same type of cancer had returned in the remaining breast.  This time it was stage 4 and had spread to a stomach polyp (that has since been removed).

From a medical standpoint there isn’t a specific cure at this time for Stage 4 cancer that has spread. Treatments aim at reduction and management like a chronic illness, with the goal being to lengthen timing between necessary treatments. We are presently in the first phase of a chemotherapy treatment plan: a set of 4 treatments, with 2 weeks on and 1 week off. At the end of February, tests will be run to determine progress on reduction.

Through our first journey with cancer and into this second, we have been very blessed by so many family members, friends, our church, and our employers that have helped in so many ways: prayers; child care of our grade school daughter, Alice; and understanding and flexibility, to name just a few.

Our ability to handle all of the financial bills that come with cancer-related treatment - especially now that we are looking at a long-term status this second time - can become overwhelming, especially as we start a new insurance year.

My cousin has very graciously offered to help set up a financial fund for those who are able to help. All proceeds will be used for medical bills both now and in the long-term.

From the very bottom of my heart my wife, daughter, and myself thank you ever so much for any assistance you can provide.
