Story
Hello everyone,
My name is Tyleata, owner of JJ’s Mama’s Soulfood — a business built on love, family, and serving my community.
Right now, I’m going through something I never imagined.
The building where my restaurant was located has officially been sold, and I was given only 10 days to leave.
This came as a complete shock.
For 5 years, I have consistently paid my rent and electricity on time, doing everything I was supposed to do as a tenant and business owner. I built my business honestly, with hard work, dedication, and love for my community.
When I found out the building was being sold, I tried everything I could to purchase it myself so I could keep JJ’s Mama’s Soulfood where it has been.
But without established business credit, it made the process extremely difficult.
I even asked if the rent I’ve faithfully paid over the years could be used toward a down payment — which would have been almost half of what they were asking — but I was told no because it wasn’t part of the original agreement.
I also asked if the property could simply be transferred over to me, but again, that wasn’t an option.
On top of that, I was told that the new buyers planned to keep me, which gave me hope. But in reality, I later found out I would not be staying. I was originally supposed to have more time, but due to a situation involving a check already in the mail, I was suddenly told I had just 10 days to leave.
After everything I’ve poured into this business — the time, the money, the sacrifices — to have it end this way has been heartbreaking.
I didn’t get time to properly prepare.
I didn’t get time to transition.
I didn’t get closure.
But I am not giving up.
JJ’s Mama’s Soulfood is more than a location — it’s a purpose. And I am determined to keep it alive.
My plan now is to rebuild and relaunch by opening:
• A food truck, so I can continue serving my community wherever I go
or
• A smaller take-out location, so I can get back up and running as quickly as possible
To make this happen, I’m trying to raise $45,000 to cover:
• Food truck purchase or securing a new location
• Equipment and setup
• Permits and licensing
• Costs from this sudden closure and transition
I want to say this from my heart —
I am not someone who usually asks for help.
If you know me, you know I’m always the one giving — feeding people, supporting others, showing up for my community again and again.
But right now… I need that same support back.
If JJ’s Mama’s Soulfood has ever fed you, comforted you, or been part of your life, I’m asking you to stand with me during this difficult time.
No donation is too small.
And if you’re unable to donate, you can still support by:
• Sharing this fundraiser
• Purchasing tickets to my Soulfood Experience Tour on Eventbrite
This is not the end of JJ’s Mama’s Soulfood.
With your help, we will rebuild, we will continue, and we will come back stronger.
Thank you for your love, your support, and your prayers.
With strength and gratitude,
Tyleata
