Our sweet 2-year-old kitty, Jinx, is experiencing his third urinary blockage and is currently undergoing emergency surgery (perineal urethrostomy) to prevent his bladder from rupturing and save his life. Jinx is a highly valued member of our family and an enormous help in socializing the many cats and dogs we foster, rehabilitate, and find forever homes for.
Jinx first blocked about a year ago and was successfully treated at the emergency vet at that time. In addition to the emergency treatment he received to relieve the blockage, he was placed on a prescription diet and we hoped for the best. This initial treatment cost approximately $1,800.
The diet helped, and Jinx had an uneventful year with no recurrence of symptoms until Monday, when we noticed Jinx was more vocal than normal and taking frequent trips to the litter box. We immediately recognized that he had blocked again, and off we went to urgent care. They were able to unblock him again and recommended surgery in the future to prevent recurrence. This visit was approximately $1,500.
We were hoping that would be the end of the story, but it’s not. Early Wednesday morning, Jinx was not able to urinate once again. We waited in line at a lower-cost clinic for a couple of hours before they opened, hoping they’d be able to help, knowing the only viable option at this point was the surgery. They do not perform the surgery at that practice.
We called approximately 100 vets Wednesday morning, as far as 3 hours away, and by the afternoon we found somewhere that could see him and get him in for surgery right away. The estimate we were provided was $4,000-$5,000 and as of now (Thursday), he has already hit the top end of that estimate, with further charges to accrue during his hospitalization. This is, of course, a huge unexpected expense, so we are reaching out to our community with a request for your assistance.
Thank you all for any amount you are able to contribute.
If we exceed the amount needed to cover the remainder of his veterinary expenses, the additional funds will be used to help us continue our work providing veterinary care and sterilization surgeries for the feral cats in our local community.
