As a mom, there are moments when you look at your child and realize they are standing at a crossroads.
Last year, my son Jimmy found himself at one of those crossroads.
At 15 years old, he had made choices that came with serious consequences, and our family realized that something needed to change.
I was scared.
Not just because of the choices and what had happened, but because I knew how easily one difficult chapter in a teenager's life could become the story that followed him into adulthood.
But this isn't a story about the worst choices Jimmy has made.
It's a story about everything he has done since.
Jimmy was given an opportunity to change direction, and over the past year, I have watched him do exactly that.
It hasn't happened overnight, and it hasn't happened without work. There have been consequences to face, responsibilities to meet and expectations placed on him. There have been good days and difficult ones, successes and setbacks.
But through all of it, he has continued moving forward.
There are parts of Jimmy's story that I have chosen not to share publicly. He is still a teenager, and while I want to be open about why this journey has meant so much to our family, I also want to respect his privacy. My goal is not to make the most difficult chapter of his life something that follows him around our community.
What I do want to share publicly is what I have witnessed since: a kid who was given the opportunity to make a different choice about the direction of his life, and took it.
And as grateful as I am for everyone who has helped us along the way, there is something I never want to get lost in telling Jimmy's story:
Jimmy is the one who had to make the choice to change his direction.
No one could do that part for him.
Over the past year, he has shown up again and again. He has gone to school and worked to improve academically. He has volunteered his time. He has kept countless appointments and followed through on responsibilities that most kids his age have never had to think about.
And he has worked.
Even before Jimmy had a regular job, he found work wherever he could. If there was a way for him to earn money to take care of his responsibilities, he did it. Now he balances an actual job with school and everything else expected of him.
There were plenty of opportunities along the way for him to decide it was too hard, to stop showing up or to go back in the wrong direction.
He didn't.
That doesn't mean every day has been perfect. It doesn't mean there haven't been setbacks, frustrations or moments when he needed someone to remind him why all of this mattered. He's a teenager, and he's still learning.
But he kept going.
People have opened doors for Jimmy, offered guidance, held him accountable and given him second chances. But Jimmy is the one who has had to walk through those doors.
And I am incredibly proud of him for that.
Our Village
I am also incredibly grateful for every single person who has become part of our village.
That village existed long before we faced the difficulties of the last year, but over the past year, I have learned just how much it means to have people willing to show up for your child when he needs them most.
Family. Friends. Professionals. Teachers. Community members. People who have encouraged Jimmy, held him accountable, given him opportunities, listened to him, believed in him and reminded him that there are so many people in his corner.
There have been moments over the last year when I haven't known what the next step was. Moments when I was scared for my son and his future and wasn't sure how we were going to get from where we were to where I knew he could be.
And every time, someone in our village was there.
Sometimes that meant helping in a big, life-changing way. Sometimes it was advice, a conversation, an opportunity or simply someone checking in. Sometimes it was another adult seeing something good in my son during a time when he may have had trouble seeing it in himself.
I will never be able to adequately express how grateful I am for every ounce of support we have received.
None of us gets through the hardest parts of life entirely on our own. Jimmy has had an incredible village surrounding him, but he is the one who chose to accept that support and use it to keep moving forward.
Over the past year, our village has helped us turn what was one of the most frightening periods of my life as a mother into something I can now look at with hope.
They didn't give up on him.
And neither did he.
One of the most important parts of that village has been Foundations School.
Finding Foundations
Foundations is a nonprofit, Bible-based and trade-focused K-12 school in North Idaho that takes an individualized approach to education. The school works to meet students where they are academically and developmentally while emphasizing character, accountability and preparing students for life beyond the classroom.
For Jimmy, that combination has been incredibly important.
Foundations isn't focused solely on grades. Students are encouraged to think about who they want to become, how they contribute to their families and community, and what kind of future they want to build. Faith is incorporated into the school day, while students are also given opportunities to explore trades and possible career paths.
Through its trade-focused program, students are exposed to hands-on careers and learn from businesses and members of our community who are willing to share their skills and experience.
For a teenager beginning to figure out what adulthood might look like, those opportunities matter.
But what Foundations has given Jimmy goes beyond academics or learning a trade.
He found a place where the people around him didn't simply see a teenager who had made mistakes.
They saw a kid with potential.
They expected things from him. They held him accountable. They encouraged him. They gave him an environment where he could succeed academically while learning responsibility, building confidence, exploring what he might want to do with his future and figuring out the kind of young man he wants to become.
And he responded.
I've watched my son begin to rebuild his confidence. I've watched him take more responsibility for his choices. I've watched him work, learn and grow.
Most importantly, I've watched him begin to believe that his future can look very different from his past.
There have been bumps along the way. Of course there have. He's still a teenager.
But the difference between where Jimmy was and where he is today is enormous.
And that is why keeping him at Foundations matters so much to me.
Now We Need Some Help
The school that has become such an important part of Jimmy's success comes with tuition. One full school year at Foundations costs $6,000, and financially, keeping him there is more than I can manage on my own.
Asking for help isn't easy for me.
But pulling Jimmy out of an environment where he is finally thriving simply because I can't afford the tuition feels even harder.
So I'm asking our community to help me keep him there.
Our goal is to raise $6,000 to cover one full year of Jimmy's tuition at Foundations so that he can continue at the school that has played such an important role in helping him move forward.
This isn't about erasing the past.
It isn't about pretending Jimmy hasn't made mistakes or protecting him from consequences. He has faced them. He continues to meet the responsibilities that came with them, and he has worked incredibly hard to move forward.
This is about making sure those mistakes aren't the end of his story.
Kids need accountability. But they also need someone to believe they can do better.
They need second chances.
They need adults willing to show up again and again.
And when a kid decides to take those opportunities and do the work, I believe we should do everything we can to help him keep going.
Jimmy still has work ahead of him. He still has growing up to do. There will undoubtedly be more bumps in the road because that's part of being a teenager.
But today, when I look at the road he's on, I have hope.
A year ago, I was terrified of where that road might lead.
Today, I'm excited to see where it takes him.
Ways to Help
If you would like to help Jimmy continue at Foundations, you can contribute through this fundraiser.
For those who would prefer to contribute directly to the school, Foundations accepts donations through Venmo and PayPal, or checks can be dropped off directly at the school. Simply include a note that your donation is earmarked for James Wright, and it will be applied toward his tuition. I will provide the school's donation information and links separately.
Every contribution, no matter the amount, gets us a little closer to covering Jimmy's school year and allowing him to continue the progress he has worked so hard to make.
If we are fortunate enough to exceed our $6,000 goal, additional funds will be set aside toward Jimmy's tuition for the following school year and other school-related educational expenses.
And if donating isn't possible, sharing Jimmy's story is another incredibly meaningful way to help us make his village a little bigger.
There are parts of Jimmy's story I have intentionally chosen not to share publicly because he is still a teenager and deserves privacy. At the same time, I completely understand that someone considering making a donation may want to know more about the circumstances that brought us here.
If you have questions or would like to know more before deciding whether to contribute, please feel free to contact me privately. I am happy to have that conversation one-on-one while still protecting details of Jimmy's life that I don't believe need to be shared publicly.
There are already so many people who have become part of Jimmy's village.
Now we're asking our community to make that village just a little bigger.
Thank you for believing that a teenager's mistakes don't have to become his whole story.
Thank you for believing in second chances.
And most of all, thank you for helping Jimmy continue to build the future he has been working so hard for.
