We are raising funds for Jim Buttkus and Family (Maureen, Emma, Maeve, Owen and Declan). Jim is a devoted husband, loving father of four, and a resilient man who has battled through a lifetime of medical challenges. Born with a rare cleft clubfoot and significant leg length discrepancy caused by Amniotic Band Syndrome, Jim has endured more than 25 surgeries to correct complications with his right foot.
In the last few years, things have taken a difficult turn. Jim has spent the past three years on crutches, coping with debilitating pain and a bone infection (osteomyelitis). Despite undergoing seven surgeries in just the last five years, the pain and limitations have only increased. After exhausting all other options, two weeks ago Jim made the difficult but courageous decision to undergo a below-the-knee amputation in order to reclaim his quality of life.
Why Jim and His Family Needs Our Help
While Jim is at home healing and preparing for the long recovery ahead, their family is facing significant financial strain.
Jim has been unemployed for 6 months and had to shift his focus to healing. In addition, he has been unable to work, for the past couple of years, his small DJ business due to declining mobility. His wife, Maureen, currently works part-time while caring for Jim and their four children (15,14,10, 2). Their youngest, Declan, was born with Down syndrome and requires additional love and attention.
How You Can Help
Jim chose amputation not out of defeat, but out of hope — the hope that he can walk again, return to work, and be the active, present dad and husband he wants to be.
There will be many costs in the coming months including surgery-related medical expenses, prosthetic limb and fittings, physical therapy and rehabilitation. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help Jim and his family move forward. If you’re unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser with others who might be able to support.
Thank you for lifting up this incredible family during such a vulnerable time. Your kindness means the world to them.
With gratitude,
Friends of the Buttkus Family
