My name is Jim Omuletz and I have had a life-changing experience this month. I am 64 years old and fairly healthy, but on August 4th, I discovered a diabetic ulcer on the bottom of my left foot. After seeing my podiatrist and wound care, the infection had spread to my entire foot within one week. I was told by my wound care doctor to go immediately to the hospital. The next day, I was seen by a vascular surgeon who gave me the most devastating news I have ever received. My left foot had to be amputated immediately. He performed the amputation the next day. I spent the next week in the hospital and am now at home recovering.
I am stuck here on the couch all day and can't really do anything. My wonderful wife is running ragged doing everything for me and still working full-time, but she doesn't make a whole lot of money, especially when she has to take time off work to care for me. I will be out of work for at least 6 months and won't be bringing home any income. I also have medical bills starting to come in and have to get a prosthesis in a few weeks or months. I don't know how I am going to do this. I feel very humbled and have never asked for any help before, as I am a hardworking man who has always been able to support my family and myself.
