Help Jim Heal and Save Shadow

Dear Friends,

My name is Carolyn and I come to you with a heavy heart and a plea for support for our beloved friend Jim and his cherished dogs, Loki and Shadow.

Jim has endured an incredibly challenging year with numerous health struggles that culminated in a devastating workplace accident a month ago. This accident left him with multiple fractured ribs, a perforated kidney, punctured lungs, a fractured collarbone, and serious head wounds. Jim's journey to recovery began in the ICU and continued with a week in the hospital. Now, he is in the care of his mother and sister, slowly trying to heal from his injuries.

During Jim’s hospitalization, his two loyal companions, Loki and Shadow, remained at his home. His friends took turns visiting and caring for them, ensuring they were fed and loved. In the midst of this, they also started improving Jim's backyard, a labor of love to support their friend.

Tragically, on Thursday, March 6th, an unimaginable event shattered our hearts. Dave, one of Jim’s steadfast friends, found Loki, the playful three-year-old, had passed away in a horrific manner. Shadow, the 10-year-old Boxador, was left to grieve the loss of her pack mate. We took Shadow home, but soon discovered she too had been poisoned. Someone had thrown rat poison over Jim's fence, intending to harm these innocent animals.

Loki had unknowingly consumed the rat bait, and Shadow began to show signs of distress. She was rushed to the emergency vet, where they found fluid and blood around her lungs and discovered her blood wasn’t clotting properly. The vets gave her a 50/50 chance of survival, and she was admitted for intensive care. Thankfully, Shadow is now out of critical condition but requires weeks of continued treatment to combat the toxicity in her system.

Jim is beyond heartbroken by the death of his beloved Loki, and his friends Dave and I have welcomed Shadow into our home to continue her care. However, with our own financial issues and health concerns, we can't do it alone. Now, more than ever, Jim and Shadow need our help. Jim's medical bills and ongoing care are overwhelming, and Shadow’s veterinary expenses add another layer of burden. We are reaching out to you, our community, to ask for your support during this incredibly difficult time.
