Help Jim Courter Recover and Return to Serving His Community

James “Jim” Courter has spent nearly four decades showing up for others.

A resident of Valley Center since 1986, Jim is known locally not just for his work as a general contractor, but for the thousands of hours he has given—quietly and consistently—to the safety and well-being of his community.

  • He led the Valley Center Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for over a decade, training more than 700 residents in emergency preparedness, CPR, and communication.

  • He founded the Valley Center Fire Safe Council, organizing wildfire prevention efforts that have helped protect countless homes.

  • He also helped establish the Valley Center Art Gallery, supporting the creative life of the town he loves.

If you’ve lived in Valley Center, there’s a good chance Jim has impacted your life—even if you didn’t know his name.

Earlier this year, Jim faced a life-threatening medical crisis. What began in early January as a severe case of RSV quickly escalated, leading to a nine-day coma, followed by weeks in intensive care across two hospitals. After surviving that ordeal, he underwent additional major procedures, including cardiac valve replacement, bypass surgery, and heart ablation.

Thanks to that care, Jim is on the road to recovery—but it will be a long one.

As a self-employed contractor, this medical emergency has meant a complete halt to his income for months. By the time he is able to return to work, likely sometime this summer, Jim will have been out of work for nearly six months. While much of his medical care is covered, the remaining costs—combined with lost income—have created a significant financial burden.

We are seeking to raise $25,000 to help Jim cover essential living expenses and medical costs during his recovery.

Even now, Jim is thinking about how to give back. As he regains his strength, he plans to help reestablish the Fire Safe Council’s wildfire safety programs—work that continues to protect the community he calls home.

For someone who has given so much, this is a moment to give something back.

If you’re able to contribute, thank you! If not, sharing this page is a meaningful way to help. Every gesture of support makes a difference as Jim focuses on healing and returning to the life—and service—he cares so deeply about.
