Help jij Sofie (22) haar leven terug te krijgen? Het verhaal van mijn zus

Het is nauwelijks te beschrijven hoe het leven van mijn zus in één klap compleet is veranderd en nu al bijna 2,5 jaar stilstaat. Sofie haar leven is van leven naar overleven gegaan toen ze in maart 2022 corona opliep tijdens haar stage HBO verpleegkunde in het ziekenhuis. Van iemand vol ambitie, vreugde en levenslust naar iemand wiens wereld ineens heel klein is geworden. Zo klein dat haar leven zich afspeelt binnen 4 muren (en dan bedoel ik niet eens ons huis, maar haar slaapkamer). Sofie wilde zich inzetten voor patiënten, maar bleef achter met Long-COVID, ook wel Post-COVID genoemd.

Deze ziekte heeft ervoor gezorgd dat Sofie haar dagen in haar slaapkamer op bed doorbrengt met een lichaam dat uitgeteld is, een lichaam dat compleet in de war is en een lichaam dat extreme pijn heeft. Elke dag levert ze een strijd door haar lichamelijke beperkingen. Ik en mijn ouders voelen ons machteloos en het doet ons onwijs veel verdriet om te zien hoe Sofie haar leven zo is veranderd en om haar zo te zien lijden.

Al 2 jaar en 4 maanden speur ik samen met mijn ouders het internet, artikelen, kranten etc. af, bezoeken we met of zonder Sofie instanties op zoek naar een behandeling. Op zoek naar hulp voor Sofie. Zij pakt dan ook alles aan om te herstellen, maar tot nu toe in Nederland zonder resultaat. Maar wij geven de hoop nooit op. Opgeven is geen optie. Vandaar onze speurtocht ook in andere landen. En deze speurtocht heeft tot iets geleid, namelijk een hoopgevende, veelbelovende behandeling in de Verenigde Staten. Het is een effectieve behandeling waardoor Sofie kan herstellen.

Een rode draad voor ons de afgelopen jaren is hoop. Hoop geeft ons kracht. En hier is dan eindelijk hetgeen waar wij zo lang op hebben gehoopt. Een behandeling, een kans voor Sofie om beter te worden. Ze moet net als haar leeftijdsgenoten eropuit kunnen en de wereld ontdekken. Gaan en staan waar zij wil. Daarom richt ik samen met mijn ouders deze crowdfunding op voor mijn zus, zodat zij kan herstellen. Beter kan worden. Weer kan leven in plaats van overleven.

Sofie haar strijd

Mijn zus is net 22 geworden, maar ze was 19 toen ze ziek werd. Sofie is altijd een ondernemend en zorgzaam meisje geweest met ontzettend veel aandacht voor iedereen. Ze had een druk sociaal leven en ondernam van alles. Sinds haar COVID-besmetting is ze nog maar een schim van wie zij was. Ze studeerde verpleegkunde en liep stage in het ziekenhuis. Dat deed ze met enthousiasme, vreugde en een groot gevoel van betrokkenheid. Tijdens haar stage is mijn zus zelf besmet geraakt met corona. Dit bleek de start te zijn van een nachtmerrie, die tot op heden nog steeds voortduurt.

Sinds haar besmetting heeft ze allerlei klachten die blijven aanhouden:

• Ontregeld zenuwstelsel

• Hartritmestoornis

• Hypertachycardie (verhoogde hartslag bij inspanning en in rust)

• Hartkloppingen

• POTS

• PEM (inspanningsintolerantie)

• Extreme vermoeidheid

• Verstoorde prikkelverwerking

• Brain Fog (hersenmist)

• Lichamelijke pijn

Dit zijn de symptomen die Sofie het meest belemmeren, maar er zijn er helaas nog veel meer.

Inmiddels zijn we al meer dan 2 jaar verder en grijpen wij samen met Sofie alles aan dat haar beter kan maken. Ze is een doorzetter. Deze paden heeft ze al bewandeld:

• Cardioloog

• Medicatie; bètablokkers

• Internist

• Sportarts

• Fysiotherapie

• Ergotherapie

• Logopedie

• Ademhalingstherapie

• Pacing

• Acupunctuur

• Medische Daith Piercing / medical piercing

• Mediteren

• Supplementen en homeopathische middelen

• Diëten

Ondanks alle beperkingen en onzekerheden geeft Sofie de strijd niet op. Ze is vastbesloten om haar leven terug te krijgen en haar dromen weer na te jagen. En vooral gewoon een leven te leiden, waarin zij zich geen zorgen hoeft te maken over haar gezondheid of onzeker hoeft te zijn over haar toekomst. Ook wil ik mijn zus weer terug!! Dat we weer samen kunnen avondeten en de dag doorspreken, wandelen met de hond, herinneringen kunnen maken, buiten de deur, buitenshuis, zonder zorgen.

Behandeling in de VS

Er is hoop voor Sofie. Er is een effectieve en veelbelovende behandeling in de Verenigde Staten die zeer succesvol is voor Post-COVID patiënten. Hyperbare zuurstoftherapie, ook wel HBOT genoemd. Het is een traject van 4 maanden. Deze kostbare behandeling bestaat uit 3 fasen:

• Vooronderzoek;

• Gepersonaliseerd behandelplan;

• Nazorg en eindonderzoek.

Sofie wordt van tevoren eerst helemaal onderzocht. Er worden verschillende scans gemaakt, bloedonderzoeken gedaan en lichamelijke testen afgenomen. Op basis van de uitkomst krijgt Sofie een op maat gemaakt behandelplan. Vervolgens wordt er gestart met een 12 weken durende hyperbare zuurstoftherapie. Elke werkdag zal zij een ‘duiksessie’ (ook wel dives genoemd) van 2 uur ondergaan. Dit vindt plaats in een grote tank met 2.0 bar druk. Door 100% zuurstof toe te dienen op 2.0 bar druk komt de zuurstof tot op celniveau in het lichaam. Uiteindelijk zorgen in het totaal 60 dives ervoor dat er nieuwe stamcellen aangemaakt worden. Deze nieuwe stamcellen gaan dan op pad in het lichaam om de kapotte cellen die Sofie ziek maken te vervangen.

Ook zal zij tijdens de behandeling ‘brain training’, ook wel neuroplasticiteit training krijgen. Door tijdens de dives deze training te volgen worden de hersenen gestimuleerd om uitgevallen functies te herstellen.

Gedurende dit traject zal er begeleiding worden geboden vanuit het multidisciplinair team van Aviv. Dit team bestaat uit artsen, neurologen, fysiologen, neuropsychologen, verpleegkundigen en voedingsdeskundigen. Deze groep van specialisten staat dagelijks voor Sofie klaar om haar te helpen.

Eenmaal terug in Nederland volgt de nazorg van 6 maanden. Iedere maand zal ze een voortgangsgesprek met het team van artsen van Aviv hebben. Deze periode wordt uiteindelijk afgesloten met een eindonderzoek, zoals aan het begin van de behandeling, in de kliniek in Florida.

Het doel

Het gaat om een zeer intensieve en kostbare behandeling. De totale kosten van de behandeling en het verblijf bedragen ruim € 75.000,-. Door Sofie haar ziekte zal er continu een begeleider bij moeten zijn om haar te ondersteunen en voor haar te zorgen.

Will you help Sofie (22) get her life back? My sister her story

It is hard to put into words how my sister's life has changed completely in such a short time. 2 and half years ago her life went from living to surviving when Sofie suffered a COVID-infection in March 2022 during her HBO nursing internship at the hospital. She went from someone full of ambition, joy and passion for life to someone whose world suddenly became very small. So small that her life now revolves around 4 walls (and I don't even mean our house, but her bedroom). Sofie wanted to advocate for patients, but was left with Long-COVID, also known as Post-COVID.

This disease has left Sofie spending her days in her bedroom lying in bed with a body that is exhausted, a body that is dysregulated and a body that is in extreme pain. Every day she struggles against her physical limitations. Me and my parents feel powerless and it saddens us immensely to see how Sofie's life has changed so much and to see her suffer.

For 2 years and 4 months me and my parents have been scouring the internet, articles, newspapers etc, visiting doctors with or without Sofie looking for treatment. Looking for help for Sofie. She is trying everything to recover, but so far in the Netherlands without results. But we never give up hope. Giving up is not an option. Therefore, our search for treatment in other countries. And this has led to something. A hopeful, promising treatment in the United States. It is an effective treatment allowing Sofie to recover.

Hope is what keeps us going. Hope gives us strength. And here is what we have hoped for for so long. A treatment, a chance for Sofie to get better. She needs to be able to go out and explore like other people in their twenties would. That's why my parents and I are setting up this crowdfunding for my sister, so she can recover. Get better. Live again instead of surviving.

Sofie's battle

My sister just turned 22, but she was 19 when she got sick. Sofie has always been an active, exploring and caring girl with tremendous attention for everyone. She had a busy social life and initiated all kinds of activities. Since her COVID infection, she is only a small part of who she was. She studied nursing and did an internship at the hospital. She did so with enthusiasm, joy and a great sense of commitment. During her internship, my sister became infected with COVID. This turned out to be the start of a nightmare, which continues to this day.

Since her infection, she has had all sorts of symptoms that persist:

• Dysregulated nervous system

• Cardiac arrhythmia

• Hypertachycardia (increased heart rate on exertion and at rest)

• Heart palpitations

• POTS

• PEM (exercise intolerance)

• Extreme fatigue

• Impaired stimulus processing

• Brain Fog

• Physical pain

These are the symptoms that my sister suffers from the most, but unfortunately there are many more.

Now, almost 2.5 years later, together with Sofie we are grasping at anything that can make her better. She is a go-getter. She has already taken these paths:

• Cardiologist

• Internist

• Sports doctor

• Physical therapy

• Occupational therapy

• Speech therapy

• Respiratory/ breathing therapy

• Pacing

• Acupuncture

Despite all the limitations and uncertainties, Sofie is not giving up. She is determined to get her life back and pursue her dreams again. And above all to live a life where she does not have to worry about her health or be uncertain about her future. Also, I want my sister back!! So we can have dinner together again and talk about our day, walk with our dog, make memories again, outside the door, outside the house, without worries.

Treatment in the United States

There is hope for Sofie. There is an effective and promising treatment in the United States that is very successful for Post-COVID patients. It involves a four month program with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, also known as HBOT. This costly treatment consists of 3 phases:

• Pre-assessment;

• Personalized treatment plan;

• Post-assessment and aftercare.

First, Sofie undergoes a comprehensive assessment. Various scans, blood tests and physical tests are taken. Based on the results, Sofie is given a customized treatment plan. Then a 12-week hyperbaric oxygen therapy is started. Each working day, she will be making a 2-hour "diving session" (also called dives). During these sessions Sofie will be in a large tank with 2.0 bar pressure. By administering 100% oxygen at 2.0 bar pressure, the oxygen gets down to the cellular level in the body. Ultimately, a total of 60 dives cause new stem cells to be produced. These new stem cells then go out into the body to replace the broken cells that make Sofie sick.

She will also receive "brain training," also known as neuroplasticity training, during treatment. By receiving this training during the dives, the brain is stimulated to restore lost functions.

Throughout this treatment, guidance will be provided from Aviv's multidisciplinary team. This team consists of physicians, neurologists, physiologists, neuropsychologists, nurses and nutritionists. This group of specialists will be helping Sofie every day.

Once back in the Netherlands, 6 months of aftercare follows. Every month Sofie will have a progress meeting with Aviv’s team of doctors. This period will be concluded with a final examination, as at the beginning of treatment, at the clinic in Florida.

The goal

This is a very intensive and costly treatment. The total cost of the treatment and stay is over € 75.000,-. Because this treatment will require a lot of energy, an attendant will need to be with her all the time to support and care for her.
