For nearly two years, Jianna has been fighting a battle that no child should ever have to face.
Jianna was only 12 years old when this medical journey began. She is now 13 and still fighting every single day.
What first started this nightmare was a sudden and severe problem with Jianna’s blood. Her body began struggling to maintain healthy blood counts, and doctors discovered her levels were dropping to dangerously low numbers.
At times, Jianna has had almost no white blood cells to fight infection, dangerously low platelets needed for clotting, and severely low hemoglobin levels. This means even small illnesses or injuries can become a serious risk. Her immune system is extremely fragile, and doctors must monitor her closely to keep her safe.
Over the past 22 months, Jianna has been in and out of hospitals as doctors try to control the severe inflammation affecting her body and prevent permanent organ damage.
She now requires ongoing care from multiple specialists to monitor her lungs, kidneys, heart, vision, and neurological health.
Jianna has already endured some of the most aggressive treatments doctors can offer, but unfortunately they have not helped the way we hoped. On top of that, she has had serious reactions to certain blood products and treatments, which has made her even more medically fragile and complicated to treat.
We are currently trying another treatment that is not available in our hometown. This means we must travel for medical care while also managing constant doctor visits, hospital stays, and virtual appointments with specialists.
Living with this illness means Jianna experiences daily pain, extreme exhaustion, and frequent flare-ups. She also suffers from symptoms such as nausea, fainting spells, bleeding episodes, shortness of breath, painful mouth sores, light sensitivity, and widespread musculoskeletal pain. These symptoms make normal childhood activities impossible. Some days she cannot even do basic daily tasks on her own.
Instead of enjoying school, friends, and the normal life a child should have, much of Jianna’s time is spent in hospitals, doctors’ offices, or recovering from another flare.
As a parent, watching your child suffer and not being able to take the pain away is heartbreaking.
Over the past 22 months, the financial impact has also become overwhelming. Even with insurance, our portion of Jianna’s medical bills has already reached $37,000, and the costs continue to grow.
Because the treatment she needs is not available locally, we are now facing the difficult possibility of relocating in order to access better medical care and stability. Unfortunately, we do not have a support system where we currently live and have been disqualified from local assistance programs, leaving us to navigate this crisis largely on our own.
Between medical travel, ongoing treatments, and caring for Jianna full-time, we have been struggling just to keep a roof over our heads while continuing to fight for her health.
