On October 3rd, my son, Jevon Burkett, received tragic news: stage 4 colon cancer.
Learning you have cancer never comes at a good time, but for his family and 7yr old son, the timing of his diagnosis was devastating. He is a deeply spiritual and compassionate man, and an incredibly giving spirit, someone who truly deserves the best of life’s gifts.
Jevon began experiencing troubling symptoms in September 2021. He underwent his first surgery to discover he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. After brief months of tests, the doctor did not recover any more cancer cells. His diagnosis of no finding of cancer cells was a surprise as he was ready to start his chemotherapy.
In September 2022, he began to have more aches and pain in his abdominal area; the doctors diagnosed him with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Docotrs wanted to operate but found multiple tumors blocking his way of urinating, so they placed a nephrostomy tube passed from the back, through the skin and then through the kidney, to the point where the urine collects. Doctors could not operate to remove the tumors because of their location; chemotherapy was started right away. He will have this tube in his back for six months. This whole ordeal is another devastation to the family.
On Novemer 28, he went to the hospital because his cord was accidentally pulled out of his back. When the doctors examined and recovered the tube in his back, they found bacteria in his other kidney that did not belong. They gave Jevon the option to have two tubes in his back or take antibiotics. He chooses the antibiotics so he can work to pay his bills. It is hard for him to rest when the thought of bills and homelessness comes to mind.
Jevon is determined to face this head-on to live for his loving son and family. He has a hard battle ahead. On top of medical stresses and multiple doctor appointments, this discovery made it hard to work and stay on top of current bills.
