Help Jessica McBee Gain Mobility with Custom Wheelchair

Hi, I'm Jessica McBee.

This is the most agonizingly vulnerable place I've ever been in, but at this point, the only way we can make this happen for me is if I ask for help.

I was diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Mast Cell Activation, Hip Dysplasia, and Central Sensitization Syndrome (and other things) on July 7th, 2025. For the 13 months prior to diagnosis, I have had difficulty with mobility. I have a walker, crutches, canes, and when those no longer allowed me to get out of the house, my husband and I purchased a $1,200 wheelchair.

I spend my weeks at physical therapy and specialist appointments that have not allowed me the freedom to hold a job in quite some time. We are blessed to be able to make it to each paycheck, but to be honest, it's all God!

EDS affects all aspects of my body and internal organs as it is a genetic defect in my collagen. As we all age, we begin losing collagen. This truth, coupled with my genetic defect, has rapidly affected my ability to walk and will likely continue to debilitate my other joints and organs. I rely on a wheelchair every day to live with independence. The chair I currently use is not made specific to my body and weighs around 35 pounds. Although that doesn't seem like a lot, trying to load and unload my chair has pulled my shoulder out of socket more than once. My therapist and physician know that protecting my shoulders and wrists is a top priority if I'm going to be successfully mobile with a manual chair. This is why I am determined to continue going to the gym to keep my arms strong. They will deteriorate, but the longer I keep muscle on them, the better. My current chair is amazing at allowing me freedom, but it doesn't meet all of my needs. After consultations with medical professionals and mobility specialists, it’s clear that a custom wheelchair is a necessary next step to improve my overall quality of life.

This custom wheelchair comes at a significant cost: $10,000-$15,000. This total covers everything—fittings, build, delivery, and any necessary adjustments.

Since I do have insurance, I will need to pay 25% of this cost, IF my chair is created before the end of the year as our deductible is currently met. This is not a luxury item; it’s something that will allow me to move through life with more freedom and less pain.

I know times are hard for absolutely everyone, but if you feel led to give—whether it’s $1 or $50—it means more than I could ever express. Every single donation gets me one step closer to the mobility I need.

A Note About Extra Funds
In the spirit of giving back, any proceeds raised beyond the exact cost needed for the wheelchair will be donated directly to The Harbor Worship Center, a community that supports me and prays with me. They are a light in my life, and I’d love to return the favor in any way I can.

If you can’t give financially, please consider sharing with your friends and family. Your prayers, support, and encouragement are equally appreciated!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
