My close friend Jenny faced every dog owner’s nightmare. Her beloved husky Balto suddenly became very ill after eating something unknown. Within hours, he was rushed to the emergency vet, severely dehydrated and in urgent need of care. The vets have given him IV fluids and X-rays, but they’re still trying to figure out exactly what made him so sick. Right now, Balto has to stay at the vet, and there’s no clear answer on when he’ll be able to come home.

Jenny and I have been friends since college, where we both majored in architecture. I’ve seen firsthand how much Balto means to her—he’s been by her side since he was a puppy, and he’s truly her family. Watching her go through this has been heartbreaking. She’s overwhelmed by worry for Balto and the vet bills, which have already become overwhelming and are still climbing as we wait for answers.
