I am Nancy Bieber. Last year we raised over $10,000 to support Jenny Hunter while she waited for social security and medicaid to kick in and provide for her needs following a devastating bout of meningitis that left her deaf and blind. We are still waiting, and Jenny's fund is drained.
We just learned that Jenny's social security claim was randomly selected for "a more thorough investigation." Until they accept her claim, Jenny has NO income, and Texas medicaid will not accept her claim until Social Security affirms that she is disabled - truly a nightmare! (Texas does not have expanded medicaid, and adults are not eligible unless they are disabled.)
As most of our readers know, Jenny woke up from a coma in December 2023 deaf and blind. Little has changed. She is still completely blind. She got a cochlear implant, and while some hearing is restored, she is not able to hear clearly enough to make out words or have a conversation. She can hear an alarm, which is some comfort.
Many of the services Jenny needs are not provided by her medical insurance, which, in any case, may be cancelled any time. She has had no income, and has exhausted her small retirement account and all other assets.
She has been housed and cared for by my daughter, her life long friend, Kate Powell. Kate is a teacher, and school resumes in a couple of weeks.
Jenny still needs daily support while Kate is at work. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - it costs money to provide essential care.
