In Paisley's own words:

Hi there! I bet you are wondering "Who is Paisley and why does she need help?" Well here is the story.

I began my journey as a frisky puppy on a farm, with my mom, Jennifer. I had so much love to share, and I was in the perfect place! Mom suffers from a chronic debilitating autoimmune illness which, when it flares, can leave her extremely ill, struggling to manage life's daily tasks. I had just what she needed - the antics of a clown to make her laugh with my shenanigans; kisses and snuggles if she was down. Mom loves dogs and we have been her passion, along with horses, since she was young. I am lucky because she is so devoted.

Sadly, our farm, the horses, as well as commuting 50 minutes each way to her job in the city became more than Mom could manage with her illness, and we had to give up everything. Mom sent the horses to a breeder friend in the States because she knew her friend would find the horses the best homes. Some friends helped us and we moved to the city. Mom says she would never have survived this drastic life change without me.

Mom's increasingly complex health problems led her doctor to recommend what we called a "succession plan", knowing that Mom loved to be kept busy with naughty monkey antics, thus my little brother, Peter Parker, entered our lives to be our new family and Support Dog in training. He is a natural but still needs me around to set the example. We are the perfect pair and one day he will be the teacher to a new pup for our mom.

But PLEASE not yet!! It isn't not my time and we are not ready!

Mom's illness sometimes flares to the point that she cannot work. Therefore, she has to go on disability as she is currently. Mom is a dedicated Psychiatric Nurse who loves her work and wants to return when her health improves. She is studying hard, taking courses to retain her license to practice. It is hard for her, but Parker and I know just how to help, and we keep her motivated with our goofy antics and all the love and cuddles she can handle.

Mom, Parker and I live a simple, frugal life but we have a roof over our heads, good food on the floor, and most of all, we have each other. Mom's income does this and also allows her to save a bit to ensure our future. We take care of each other.

In Jennifer’s words:

Recently my beautiful family's world was turned upside-down. Paisley developed severe pneumonia. The cost of trips to the vet, tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, several courses of different medications, more x-rays, further diagnostics, including a CT scan, was high, and quickly ate up my savings until daily finances became an enormous struggle. I am now selling as many things as I can, but with high cost of living, and my hugely increased rent this summer, we are at risk.

Further costs will threaten my ability to meet our daily needs and even my ability to pay for my own medications.

After a six-week struggle, Paisley's pneumonia resolved, but it was found to have triggered an underlying illness which required daily medication and this will be lifelong.

The thought of Paisley losing her life because of dwindling funds was
heartbreaking, and untenable. Anyone who has known the love and devotion of an animal and how integral they become as a part of the family, will know just how I felt.

But there is some news! Paisley's condition has improved on the new medication. The vet continues to follow her symptoms and does blood work on a frequent basis to maintain her current condition and monitor her diagnosis, which is autoimmune disease. Thus, we have unending bills. However, the main thing is that we are on the right track! Paisley is eating well and has gained back her weight and a lot of her strength. She is starting to gently play again and even go for short walks. Paisley fights on under my loving care and we both receive love, comfort, and laughs from young Peter Parker, superhero in training.

While worth every cent to help Paisley, this all exhausted my finances. I desperately need help to recoup some of the financial load built up by the costs incurred saving my beloved friend. Complicating matters enormously is that my elderly parents live 2 provinces away. Dad is stable right now but could have a stroke at any time. Mom's life of illness just keeps compounding and there is little more that can be done. Time is very limited, yet somewhat unknown, and so trips from Saskatchewan to BC have been adding greatly to my financial load and my overall stress. I desperately need Paisley.

I cannot do this alone. If others can help us past this crisis I will once again be able to provide for our family. I just need help through this emergency.

These beloved companions are my life and best reason for living. They are my anchors and my true north.

Please, if you can, help my family, with my sincere thanks and gratitude until the end of time.

Love, peace and joy to all,

Jennifer and "The Peas"

This WAS our story, but then things changed again.......

Sadly, recently a second tragedy befell us. Paisley was doing quite well on her immuno-suppressant medications and was even able to go visit her grandmother in BC. But at the end of that visit, she was somehow injured severely. I went into the yard to find her limping and staggering. We could feel a clicking in her knee and feared a slipped stifle. Vet examination confirmed that Paisley tore the cruciate ligament in her left knee. The cruciate ligaments do not heal and the treatment of choice is a surgery called TPLO, Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy, at a cost of around $6300 +. The alternative would be increasing pain, arthritis and euthanasia, and she probably wouldn’t have long, especially with winter on the way and us living in a third floor walk up. As usual, Paisley’s attitude is cheerful and brave, my little trooper, but clearly we are in way more financial trouble now.

But I can't let Paisley die because of money. This is so important to me because the dogs are all I have and they are always so loyal to me. All Paisley wants is love, play, food and a good scratch now and then. She never lies to me, hurts my feelings or gets mad at me. She is the perfect little being. My family still loves to laugh at the story of how when I was a tiny child and was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would answer, "a dog". Well, it is funny, but now I know that I was wise beyond my years. Man's best friend for a reason. We need them.

Surgery is Friday, October 11/24. Please keep her in your thoughts and if you are able, please donate. We need your help. Thank you.
