Help Jennifer Wright After Surgery for Dog Bite

Donation protected
Wednesday, April 24th at 8:30PM I was at work when I received a call from Jennifer. Normally, I do not pick up if I'm working, but for some reason I did. Jennifer is screaming in agony. I didn't understand what she was saying but I knew something had happened and I had to go...

Three weeks earlier, Jennifer saw a post about a dog that had serious medical problems and was going to be put down unless someone would volunteer to foster it. Jennifer did not hesitate and contacted the organization and got the green light! The foster is a pit bull who had possibly been over-bred  and neglected. She had heart worms and a prolapsed uterus and needed immediate surgical attention. This dog had not have a good life. She came into our home very malnourished. weighing only 45 lbs and yet full of life.

We were very excited for the opportunity to help. The foster pup and my dog Tony did not get off to a great start. Jennifer and I realized this was not going to be an easy foster. However, we had had the pup for just a day and just had surgery. We knew she was very uncomfortable (she was still bleeding - our walls and carpet had blood stains).

A week later, Jennifer is outside with the dogs and is petting Tony. The foster pup came running to get in between them and Tony did not like that. They both growled at each other and started to fight. The pup was able to get a few scratches on Tony and Tony got her back a few times too before we were able to separate them. At this point we began to reevaluate the situation and see if maybe this household wasn't right for the foster pup; however, we did not want to give up on the pup and decided to keep trying. It was important to Jennifer to give the foster pup everything she needed to heal and thrive.

Two weeks later, it is Wednesday, April 24th...
I get home and I see Jennifer with a towel around her arm. BLOODY. There's blood all over the floor. Blood on the carpet. Blood on the curtains. There's a towel on the floor SOAKED in blood. Jennifer is hysterical. She tells me as she cries and screams in agony:

"I was wiping Tony's feet when the pup came running and started growling. Tony growled back and I knew they'd start fighting, so I picked Tony up to separate them and that's when the pup jumped, trying to get Tony but got my arm instead. Tony and our other dog Emma both started defending me. I knew she had broken my arm! I don't know what prompted her to let go, but once she did I was able to get Tony and the pup to go outside while I put Emma in the bathroom, and then I went outside and picked the pup up with my left hand and put her in the cage. That's when I called you. I'm just glad she didn't get Tony"

Her broken arm, the blood, the pain, the fear, the agony did not stop Jennifer from separating the dogs and making sure our dogs and the pup were okay. Although what happened is tragic, the part that is breaking Jennifer's heart is that the dogs had to go through this and what this injury implies... Three years ago, Jennifer started working on her basics to get into Sonography. She made it in the program, and is currently attempting to finish her first year. This program requires you to be a full time student (9-5) for two years without pay. She only has one year left in the program - if she is able to recover...If she cannot scan, she will be removed from the program...Her dreams are crushed like her arm. The physical pain she felt did not and still does not compare to the emotional toll she is going through right now.

I'm seeking help to pay for the medical bills. Since she's in this program full time, she is working part time and does not qualify for short-term disability. Her injuries will put her put of work for a minimum of two months. Her treatment required her to have reconstructive surgery on her arm. They had to put in a plate and six (6) screws to correct the fracture and stabilize the bone. She also had to get some stitches on her foot.

Her projected recovery will take about 6 weeks. The sooner she can start physical therapy, the bigger the chance she will recover faster and able to stay in the program she fought so hard to get in to. There are talks of a second surgery needed, but Drs are waiting to see how the healing goes. We are looking at an estimated bill of $10,000. Any help is greatly appreciated!

These pictures show only the top part of her arm. The bottom part has 2 wounds like the ones in the picture. While prepping for surgery, they found around 30 puncture wounds.

These are the brave pups that protected Jennifer!

Jennifer does not want the foster pup or the organization to be held responsible for what happened. It was a freak accident. This pup is super sweet. She just wants love and attention. We hope she finds the care she needs and is able to live a happy life. We hope this organization continues to help animals live the life they deserve. Jennifer is looking to heal, finish school, and is looking forward to fostering again.
