My name is Jennifer Erwin - a daughter, mother, and, more importantly, a worried wife. My husband Marty has always been the solid foundation of our family and has done whatever is necessary to make sure we were cared for and provided for - even at the cost of his own health. Four years ago this February, I suffered a stroke, and Marty was there every step of the way, helping me physically, coaching me mentally, and steadying me emotionally - he proved invaluable to my care. A year later I spent seven weeks in the hospital with the flu and kidney failure, to which Marty spared no effort for my care once again. Between my stroke and my hospital stay my mind is not as sharp as it once was, and I’m unable to work - I filed for disability but was denied. As a result, Marty supports a family of five, with my oldest daughter trying to help out as best as she can.

 

My husband Marty supports the family as a limousine / black car driver and the winter months are notoriously slow for those in that profession, especially supporting a family of five. As a full-blown diabetic, my husband isn’t in the best of health himself and routinely has problems with callouses on the bottom of his feet getting infected. A week and a half ago, we thought my husband was suffering from Covid, so I would don my mask and gloves and take care of my husband as he had for me so many times. He was so weak that he was having trouble standing and walking, and when he ate, he couldn’t keep it down. After a particularly bad morning, I was helping him into the shower when I noticed the ring toe of his left foot was completely black - immediately I rushed him to the ER. Within 45 mins of being at the emergency room, I received a call that within the next four hours, he was going to have this foot amputated. While he was in surgery, his nurse called me and informed me that on top of loosing his foot, he was also Covid positive. The past two months, and particularly the last two weeks, have been some of the hardest for our family, especially with it being so slower-wise, we are a month behind on rent, and we’re not sure how we’re going to pay bills or pay for food. Last night they had to take him for another surgery to take even more of his leg ln preparation for a prosthetic - and it will be a long hard journey for the man that has done so much for our family. Things will be dicey for our family - I ask you from the bottom of my heart for help and prayers

 

Hi all, this is Becky McCrehin; many of you from Sitka will probably remember Jennifer as Jennifer Arvin part of a long-time Sitka family. I have known Jen almost all of my life, our families went to the same church, and we have been very close friends since my early teens. For those of you that do remember her, I'm sure you will recall that she can be a rather proud person, so you might be able to understand that for her to ask for help is very difficult, but right now, she really doesn't have anywhere to turn until they are able to get Marty on disability. For any of you that have ever had to apply, you know how long that can take. So please if you can find a way to help, even a small amount, we would all appreciate it.
