Help Becky Restore Her Vision and Independence
My name is Stephen Kent, and I am asking for help on behalf of my sister, Becky .
When Becky was just 3 months old, she was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare and life-threatening eye cancer. The treatment saved her life, but it required removing one eye and using radiation on the other. From the time she was a little girl, we were told there was a chance she could develop complications later in life but we never knew when or how severely.
Becky has lived her whole life with strength and courage, fully aware that one day her vision might decline. Still, nothing could prepare her for what happened last June.
She woke up one morning and could barely see. Doctors confirmed that she had developed a radiation-induced cataract in her remaining eye a delayed effect her doctors had warned might happen eventually. But when it finally did, it happened suddenly and dramatically, leaving Becky legally blind, unable to work, and unable to drive.
She is scheduled for surgery tentatively in February which gives us hope that she can regain vision and rebuild her independence. However, this journey has been made much harder by the financial strain:
Because she has been out of work, her employer terminated her health insurance
Her request to extend FMLA was denied, leaving her with no income
She must now cover the full cost of surgery and all medical care, as well as her basic living expenses
I am creating this GoFundMe to help Becky cover:
medical bills
Follow-up care, medications, and appointments
Rent, utilities, and daily living expenses while she’s unable to work
Becky has known all her life that this might happen someday, but that doesn’t make this moment any less frightening or overwhelming. She has never asked for help she has always pushed forward with remarkable strength. But now she truly needs support.
Thank you from the bottom of our heart for donating, sharing, or simply keeping Becky in your thoughts. Your kindness gives her hope during this difficult and uncertain time.
With gratitude,
