FAMILY EMERGENCY - Help Jenn Rolen
TLDR: Chris, an injured Iraq combat veteran, has been blinded and has 2nd degree burns from our water heater exploding in his face. His prognosis is unknown. We need immediate financial help for medical expenses and lost wages. See Updates below for a picture of injury.
Hi all. Thank you for the love, the texts and the calls. We love you. ❤️
On Monday morning, 3/1, I told Chris that the water was cold and I asked him to check the water heater while I cuddled Wren for a bit. He found that the pilot light wasn’t lit on the propane water heater. He attempted to light it and when he was bending over to look at the flame it exploded in his face. The percussion knocked me back on the mattress and I knew it had to be the water heater.
I ran to Chris and he was laying on his stomach, on the floor of our half bath/laundry room where the water heater is. He couldn’t respond, couldn’t see, couldn’t hear. The explosion took out and destroyed his hearing aid, left him unable to hear in his “good” ear, gave him 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face, head and eyes.
As of Friday, after Valley Medical Center brought in doctors from Stanford there is no prognosis for his eye. He has had fiberglass and debris pulled out each day and now, he has to have his eyes cleaned and medicated every six hours. He may lose his career working with cranes after this because the doctors seem certain there must be some kind of damage.
He has second degree burns to his head and face. His eyes were both burned but his right eye is much more severe. Both corneas are damaged and he had fiberglass and debris blown into his eyes.
Chris is home and currently completely blinded. The prognosis is unclear and we will know more in a week or so.
Chris’ hearing was damaged in Iraq and he had 60% hearing in his good ear (20% in his worse ear). He can’t hear out of that ear now and still needs to be assessed by audiology. Again, his prognosis is unknown.
We were extremely, extremely fortunate. We have been told by the water heater company as well as the propane company that we are all lucky to be alive. There was a leak in the water heater of some kind and when the propane company came out to do an inspection they found a leak in the stove as well.
I am sorry it took me so long to update. Between kids who are traumatized, talking to insurances, doctors, the water heater company, the propane company, the county, etc, and obviously Chris’ care, I’m a bit overwhelmed and stressed.
We need immediate financial help for medical expenses and lost wages.
Thank you all for your thoughts and well-wishes during this trying time.
