Hi everyone, I'm Jenn. I'm a 42 year old disabled female. I have a seizure disorder, fibromyalgia, and other autoimmune disorders, as well as several mental health disorders. Due to these problems, I have been unable to work since the age of 26, and before that I had trouble holding a job. I do receive SSI, but not federal SSDI which is social security disability, as I did not work enough. I'm in a relationship with Shannon Rollins, a 45 year old male. We've been together for 15 years. Shannon also has several health problems, including severe hypothyroidism, which just got diagnosed after 12 years of awful symptoms and many doctors who didn't care enough to find the problem. He might have a brain tumor on his pituitary gland which is causing his hypothyroidism, but we can't be sure without an MRI that we can't currently afford. He also suffers from depression and other mental health issues, and possibly something neurological that has, as yet, been undiagnosed. Shannon has essentially been out of work for almost four years as he struggles to function and be able to hold down a job.
My grandfather, Kent Jacobs, a kind, loving, and generous man, was helping us with our bills during these past few years when we have been struggling financially. He was paying for what my SSI didn't cover, and then I would give him back about 90% of my check, just keeping enough for gas for the car, etc. In September, my grandpa fell ill and was admitted to the hospital. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and was eventually sent to a rehabilitation facility to recover and hopefully go home. In early
October, he went home , but only for about two days. Then he was right back in the hospital, now with sepsis. He never recovered fully due to his age, 94, and unfortunately passed away on December 5th.
So, without his help, we have literally been relying on my less than $1000 SSI check and charity from family to get by. We were able to set up a payment plan with the electric company, but still have to pay almost $200 a month to keep it on. We have to get insurance on the car. We have rent of about $1050 a month. We looked for cheaper housing, but not with much luck. The wait list for Section 8 housing assistance is over 2 years long. If we move into something smaller, we would need a storage unit, which we also can't afford.
Basically, we're just trying to stay off of the streets. Our families cannot help us much anymore beyond what they've already done. My major concern is my cat, Sophie. She will literally attack anyone who isn't me or Shannon. So we can't give her to family, and a shelter would euthanize her. Shannon is hunting for a job but is limited in what he can do. We just need to be able to get by until he can find something. Any amount is helpful and very much appreciated.
