If you’ve ever owned a horse, ridden one, or even simply stood quietly in their presence, you know the special place they hold in this world. Yesterday, Jenn and Ryan Lusby experienced an unimaginable loss with the sudden passing of their beloved horse, Wizird.
Jenn had Wizird for 25 years—from the time he was just a baby. He grew up alongside her, becoming not just a horse, but a constant, a teacher, and a once-in-a-lifetime partner. Wizird was one of the biggest personalities in the barn, unmistakable both on the ground and under saddle. His presence was bold, funny, and deeply felt, and his absence will be felt just as strongly by every single person who knew him.
Jenn and Ryan are the heart behind Dark Head Farm, a place that has become a true home and community for so many. They show up every single day—for the horses first and foremost, and always for their people when they are needed. Every penny they earn goes right back into the barn and the animals they care for. Their lives are shaped by dedication, sacrifice, and a deep, unwavering passion for the horses in their care. Jenn spends every morning and every evening in that barn, rain or shine, giving everything she has to the animals she loves.
This GoFundMe was created so that, in this moment of loss, we can show up for them the way they have shown up for so many others—steadfastly, generously, and with love. It is also a way for this community to come together in gratitude for all that Jenn and Ryan give, and to remind them that they are not carrying this alone.
Though Wizird was 25 years old, he carried a young and vibrant spirit until the very end. Yesterday, while enjoying a brisk day out in the field with his pasture mates, he suffered a catastrophic shoulder injury. Jenn and Ryan ran to him immediately, doing everything they could, but there was nothing that could be done. Wizird passed surrounded by his mom, Jenn; his brother, Karvir; his dad, Ryan; and the community of Dark Head Farm who loved him so deeply.
The total unexpected costs for veterinary care, the coroner, and cremation services come to approximately $3,000. Our initial goal is to raise $1,500 to help ease some of that burden. Any donation—no matter how small—will make a meaningful difference and is a way to honor a remarkable horse while supporting two truly extraordinary people as they navigate this difficult season, surrounded by a community that cares deeply for them.
Thank you for helping us lift Jenn and Ryan up and for being part of the love, support, and gratitude that defines Dark Head Farm.
