Hi my name is Bev Ashton sadly I have started this Go fund me to help a dear friend out who has just been diagnosed with stage 4 Cancer . Here is the story from jen’s daughter Tess. Please help if you are able too . Thank you
It all started September 10th 2022. My mom was driving back from Vancouver and as she was driving she bit her tongue. As usual, her tongue was sore for a few days and she didn’t think too much of it. It started to get very painful so then on September 14th she went in to go see our family doctor. He took a quick look and told her he thought it was strep throat. He sent her home with some medications to treat strep. That didn’t fix anything as it was her tongue having an issue not her throat. As the pain wasn’t going away and seemed to be getting worse, she went to see him again October 7th 2022. He then thought it could be acid reflux causing the pain so he sent her home with new medication. The pain continued to get worse so on October 15th she went to Urgent Care. They took one look at her tongue and sent her straight to the hospital. She then saw an ENT there and he said it seemed concerning. They did a head CT and bloodwork and he wanted her to come back for a biopsy and a chest CT on October 19th. As she was getting the biopsy they continuously said that they need to put a rush on the results which made us nervous. Then we received the results and she found out that she had squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. The chest CT came back clear. They booked her in for surgery November 16th 2022 to remove ¾ of her tongue and some lymph nodes in her neck. Surgery went well and she was recovering in the hospital for 2 weeks. The ENT that did the surgery told her that he removed 83 lymph nodes, 5 of them were cancerous inside the node and 1 of them had cancer on the outside of the node. Then the treatment plan started. 6 weeks of radiation and that’s all. She had to wait to start radiation until she had fully recovered from surgery. As the weeks went on the swelling began to get worse in her neck. On Christmas day the pain in her neck was unbearable. She went to the ER and they wanted to do a biopsy on her neck to see if it had spread. A few days later we got the call from the doctor saying it has spread to her neck. He scheduled her to come back for another chest CT January 6th. The treatment plan had changed to radiation and chemotherapy. Treatment was set to start January 9th 2023. The morning of January 9th my mom and I go to the cancer clinic so she can begin radiation and chemotherapy. They brought us to the chemotherapy department and got her set up in a room. They began the saline IV before they administered the chemo. As we were waiting for her to begin the chemotherapy the nurse came into the room and said that they received the chest CT results and the doctor was going to call in a few minutes to go over results. He called and said it has spread to her lungs and the cancer is now classified as stage 4. The doctor decided to cancel chemotherapy and just do radiation for the time being. The current schedule is radiation 5 days a week for 4 weeks and see how the cancer responds. This radiation is only treating the cancer in her neck as it is the most aggressive. Then if all goes well, she will begin a more aggressive chemotherapy. The doctors are hopeful that she will make it to my wedding June 10th 2023 but they are not certain. The money donated would go towards helping with bills as she has been off work since October 27th and towards doing a few nice things before she is unable to. Thank you
