Hi, I'm Jen (they/she).
After getting Covid in 2020, my body has not been the same. I've struggled with long Covid symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chronic exhaustion, and intermittent lost of taste. I moved the private therapy practice I had to telehealth and I was grateful to be able to continue working from home.
In 2021 I experienced an intense season of burnout and eventually learned that I'm Autistic & ADHD with a collection of learning differences and other neurodivergences. I had to make significant life changes in order to cope with and care for myself in what I came to understand was AuDHD burnout.
I made the difficult decision to retire from therapy and close my practice as it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the level of care I expected of myself for my clients. I was also navigating living in and being licensed in a state with increasingly bigoted laws punishing providers for serving trans youth and folks with reproductive care needs and I needed a way to continue serving my community out from under that license.
In 2022 I reorganized my business to focus on serving fellow neurodivergent business owners as well as delivering neuroinclusion training and leadership development to organizations committed to co-creating a truly inclusive culture for diverse neurotypes.
I have been so grateful to do work that feels meaningful and serves my community. I get to help other late-identified neurodivergent adults navigate their identities, explore their needs, and learn how to work with their brains. I get to support folks in getting the accommodations they need in college, grad school and in the workplace. I get to teach professionals and leaders about how to cultivate greater accessibility through radical curiosity.
Being self-employed/running my own business has also been stressful. It's this double edged sword of all the flexibility, autonomy and agency I need as a disabled AuDHD person and also, none of the financial security.
Recently, I had a bit of extra income due to a training I did and was able to reestablish care with a primary doctor, something I haven't been able to afford for a while. I was really excited to find a Direct Primary Care doctor near me who is also LGBTQ+ affirming.
We did labs and got records from my previous provider which shed light on several significant health concerns:
- I am severely anemic - origin yet unknown
- I have an auto-immune condition where my body attacks my own mitochondria, especially in the liver and those antibodies are currently high
- I had an abnormal mammogram last time which needs follow up (I don't remember this because it was in 2019 during a time when I was recovering from mono with complications to my liver which is when they first discovered the anti-mitochondrial antibodies)
So, after looking at all the tests and specialists I would need to attend to all these issues, my doctor recommended I transfer to my local university health system in my county. They have a payment plan program for folks like me who aren't eligible for medicare/medicaid and can't afford insurance premiums.
I'm still financially responsible for the costs, they just give me a monthly payment plan so I don't have to pay all at once. They also set a maximum limit that I can be charged, the difference they pay. So it is a huge help.
My monthly payments are: $272
My maximum limit is: $13,084
So far (September 2025) I know that the costs of all the tests I need right now add up to about $7,750 which includes:
- colonoscopy & upper endoscopy
- diagnostic mammogram & ultrasound
- liver specialist & abdominal ultrasound
That's just to get a clearer picture of what's going on in my body. Treatment paths and costs are yet unknown.
So, this is me asking for help from friends and community far and wide.
There's so much more I want to do to advocate for and support disabled and neurodivergent people. I need the energy and the wellbeing to continue this work!
Your support means the world to me. Here are some ways you can help:
- One-time donations - these help cover copays, medications, and cost of living expenses
- Monthly donations - help offset the cost of my monthly health payments as well as my other bills and cost of living
- Sharing this campaign - your time and energy are a precious resource I am so grateful for you to use to support me by sharing this campaign with your networks and folks you know who are looking to help fund real people trying to do good work in the world
