Hi everyone, my name is Jemellea Thompson, and I’m a final year midwifery student at the University of Technology, Jamaica. I’m reaching out because I’ve hit a major financial roadblock, and I need your help to make it through this final stretch of my degree.

My journey through university has not been the straight, smooth path I imagined. What should’ve been a four-year program stretched into six; not because of lack of effort, but because life kept handing me battles I had no choice but to fight. I faced financial struggles, personal setbacks, and moments where I genuinely wondered if I’d ever finish. But every time life pushed me down, I got up. Slower sometimes, but still moving.

Because of the extended timeline, the Student Loan Bureau denied my loan request this year, stating that I “took too long” to complete the program. That decision hit me hard. I’ve been working, applying for assistance, doing everything I can to keep surviving school, and SLB was my last hope for guaranteed funding, especially after the passage of Hurricane Melissa. Still, despite that door closing, I never stopped trying because becoming a midwife isn’t just something I want, it’s something I’m meant to do.

I’ve come too far, fought too hard, and sacrificed too much to let finances stop me right at the finish line.

I love midwifery. I love caring for mothers, advocating for their safety, and supporting them through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Jamaica needs more compassionate, dedicated midwives, and I’m determined to become one.
