My dear friend Jeffrey (Jay) Cabral is currently living the glamorous life of a housebound patient after some very invasive foot surgery. He spent 13 days in the hospital fighting off an infection (and probably driving the nurses a little crazy), and now he’s home, rocking a VAC on his foot like it’s the latest fashion statement. The doctors say he’ll be out of work for at least another three months, which means his days of cutting hair and swapping stories are on hold for now.

As a barber who works on commission, Jeffrey’s income depends on being behind the chair—not behind a walker. Right now, he can’t earn a living, and even when he’s able to return, his future in the profession is a bit up in the air (unlike his foot, which is supposed to stay down). The bills, however, are not taking a break, and the stress of medical and living expenses is piling up faster than hair on the barbershop floor.
