My “nephew", Jeff Umetsu, former Production Manager for SFJAZZ has been happily living in Maui for the past 5 years until the tragic fires struck a few weeks ago. His mother, Chris Umetsu has been my “sister” for the past 51 years & present. I’m sure many of you have heard that due to the destruction of Maui’s infrastructure, small local groups have been banding together to help those in need. Jeff & his group of friends have been assisting those in need on Maui since day 1 after the fires. In fact, the day the fires began in Lahaina, Jeff, who was working his job as a high end tour guide, helped the family with his colleagues once they finished their tour that day. They made TV news!! Jeff is finding that so many locals are still in need of basic daily necessities such as flash lights; head lamps; batteries; diapers, etc. despite the arrival of FEMA & the Red Cross. I am so moved by Jeff & his friend’s aloha spirit in helping those who remain on Maui. All proceeds raised will be used for those who live on Maui. Whatever you can give, Jeff & his friends will make sure the funds raised will serve the people of Maui in more ways than we can imagine.
