Help Jeff to get back on his feet

On March 19th, 2021, Jeff Cavazos was urgently admitted to the hospital for complications related to unbeknown GIST tumors. These complications required an emergency surgery to remove 60% of his stomach along with half of his pancreas and his entire spleen.  The prognosis was great, and he was expected to make a full and speedy recovery.

During his recovery, three large blood clots formed in his lungs, which required blood thinners. This treatment led to a short period of optimism. Just before being released, Jeff started having trouble breathing accompanied with significant chest discomfort. Despite his wife, Royce Ann's attempts to get assistance from the nurse, it ultimately required Royce Ann to escalate Jeff's breathing concerns to the ICU physician.

Sadly, the medical concerns the nurse set aside as anxiety were much worse. Jeff was immediately found to have a life-threatening amount of fluid around his heart. This required sudden intubation and another emergency surgery to drain the fluid constricting Jeff's heart. This also required a critical transport to another hospital for elevated care. It was not enough. Jeff's heart and body stopped. CPR was required during transport for over 10 minutes.

Jeff's pulse returned in time for the heart surgeon to successfully drain the constricting fluid. Unfortunately, his brain and body had already suffered without a heartbeat for a dangerous amount of time. Jeff's body and all his organs were in shock forcing him to be put onto life support. Doctors were concerned Jeff had finally come to a challenge he would not overcome.

Regardless, Jeff continued to fight. Over four days Jeff's organs began responding. Both the ventilator and dialysis were needed less and less. Liver function improved. The medical team decided to begin decreasing Jeff's sedative. Over the next 24 hours, Jeff began moving slightly, opening his eyes and responding via toe movements and slight hand squeezes.

Jeff continues to amaze us, walking, talking, and joking around like his normal self.  Doctors and nurses who cared for him early on, now take time, even on their time off, to stop by to see his miraculous recovery for themselves. His progress continues through his strength in God, the incredible amount of prayers he receives and the medical care in which he is immensely thankful. Jeff and his ever-fighting spirit are eager to overcome these challenging events, and he stands prepared to lend his experience to pay it forward by helping others.

Jeff has defied all odds but is not out of the woods yet.  He is still hospitalized facing another abdominal surgery to repair his damaged stomach. His lungs still show clots that cannot be treated until surgeons finish the second abdominal surgery. Doctors continue to restore his kidneys, which still require treatment. Regardless, Jeff's faith, optimism and good humor keep him in high spirits.

Jeff has been admitted to the hospital for over a month. There is no hospital release date in sight and no return to work date. While Jeff deals with these insurmountable odds, his family is setting up this account to take away the added stress and burden of the forthcoming medical bills. Jeff needs to focus on healing. If you are able, please consider contributing anything to my brother's family. If you are unable, please share this link and pray for Jeff’s full recovery and this witness of God's miracle.
