Jeff is my close friend and classmate of more than 30 years. He is a devoted father who co-parents his 10-year-old daughter and makes sure she gets to and from school every day. Jeff is disabled and has been dealing with recent medical issues that have further limited the type of work he is able to do. Even so, he has continued doing everything he can to support himself and his daughter. Jeff relies heavily on his vehicle—not only to care for his daughter, but also to do light handyman work and travel to the farmers market in Columbia, South Carolina, where he works on weekends to supplement his disability income.
On January 7th, 2026 Jeff’s truck, his only means of transportation, was lost in a fire. By the time the fire was extinguished by the fire department, the vehicle was completely gone. This loss came at a particularly difficult time. With recent medical challenges already limiting the type of work Jeff can do, losing his vehicle has created significant and immediate hardships. Without transportation, Jeff can’t reliably pick up his daughter from school, seek appropriate work, or get to the farmers market. In addition, Jeff lives on limited disability income, and without a vehicle, accessing food consistently has become increasingly difficult. Government assistance programs can be slow to adjust to sudden emergencies like this, leaving gaps that Jeff simply doesn’t have the resources to cover. What was already a tight situation has quickly become unstable.
