As some of you are aware my dear friend's husband was recently diagnosed with a brain cancer.
Jed is a 39 yr old Veteran, Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Uncle and the list goes on. He proudly served our country serving in the Honor Guard for a time and then in Iraq and Afghanistan as an Apache attack pilot. Jed separated from the Army in 2015 then shortly after moved back to Texas for a job opportunity.
While working full time for a home builder here in San Antonio Jed graduated with honors earning a degree in construction management. He even made the deans list every semester. 2020 came and as everyone knows.... hit full force!
Jed received a job offer with a new company, his wife Jessica had a wonderful year in real estate. They decided to pursue their goal of moving to Helotes, TX and purchasing a bigger home for their family of 5. They put their house on the market and put an offer on the house they fell in love with and shortly after their offer was accepted!
A few days later Jed would experience what we now know was a grand mal seizure, followed by a few more days of seizures. They went to the ER twice where they decided it was panic attacks. He began the medication they gave him but it didn’t seem to help. They then decided to follow up with their primary care physician and he sent him for a CT and then the neurologist, followed by a MRI and then the news that floored his entire family.
“We believe you have a malignant brain tumor.” His doctor was confident it was benign they met on a Wednesday, that Friday his tumor was removed and they were home by Sunday. They celebrated and Jed healed faster than anyone expected and was back at work 2 weeks from the surgery.
Jessica noticed the pathology reports were not in as expected and began to call on a weekly basis. Despite the doctors pleas to not worry.... she worried. Finally pathology was back. Adenoid Variant of a Glioblastoma. It was a rough few days, lots of tears but Jed never wavered. “I’m fine.” or “I don’t care what they say, I’m not going anywhere.”
Jed met with his oncologist and received great news for being at the oncologist. “I believe you have been over diagnosed and over graded.” THANK GOD!!!
She said his cells were truly odd and didn’t fit any typical cell pattern they had seen. We were told if he had the cancer they say he has... he would be physically deteriorated already as it had been a month since his surgery and he was asking if he could start running! They still have to treat him per his diagnosis... because it could still be a low grade cancer.... so 6 weeks of radiation and chemo together every day. Then maintenance of chemo 5 days out of every month for 12 months after he finishes his 6 week cycle.
When Jed had his brain surgery he was not insured. Jed and Jessica spent their savings on brain surgery and moving into a house. Which would have been fine... but neither one of them expected chemo or radiation. As everyone knows this is very costly, even with great insurance.
Jessica is a dear friend of mine in the Real Estate Industry and like most, her business has taken a hit during these uncertain times, I'm asking the community come together and show this family what a community really is. We are more than friends, we are more than coworkers and we are more than neighbors.
If you can and it has been laid on your heart to give, please support the Mathis family in their fight against brain cancer.
