Help Jazlyn Walk Again – Support Her Recovery Journey

Our 17-year-old daughter, Jazlyn, was attending New Germany Rural High in NS. and was living a normal teenage life when everything changed overnight. What started as a stiff neck and some balance issues quickly spiraled into something unimaginable. Within just two days, Jazlyn became paralyzed from the neck down and required a feeding tube. She was diagnosed with idiopathic transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition that causes inflammation in the spinal cord along with inflammation and lesions on her brain and brain stem.

Jazlyn was admitted to Halifax Infirmary on April 4th and underwent 5 days of high-dose steroids and 7 rounds of plasma exchange (PLEX). We were relieved to see her making progress—her feeding tube was removed, and she regained movement in all of her limbs.

But our hope was short-lived.

Just a few weeks later, on a Saturday morning, Jazlyn woke up paralyzed from the waist down. She bravely endured another round of 5 days of steroids and 7 days of plasma exchange, but sadly, as of now—over a month and a half later—she still has not regained the use of her legs.

On June 26th, she was transferred to the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre, where she now works tirelessly with physiotherapy and occupational therapy. When asked what her goal is, she simply says, "I want to go home."

Jazlyn was recently granted a day pass to visit home and enjoy a BBQ with family and friends—a moment filled with love and hope. But the cost of these short trips is significant. We live an hour away, and due to her mobility needs, we must hire an accessible taxi, which adds another financial burden.

Jazlyn has three older brothers who

are awaiting the day they can all be together again at home. But to make that dream a reality, we face many financial challenges.

Medical equipment

Hiring accessible vehicles for trips out and home visits.

Travel and accommodation expenses for ongoing treatment

Other unexpected costs during her long recovery
