HELP FIRE-SINGED PIPER-POET JAY SALTER RECOVER
Donation protected
North California Coast musician, teacher, sound recordist, and writer Jay Salter lost almost all of his possessions— recording gear, tools, computers, art, books, music books, and many musical instruments in the recent Swanton Road Fire. His possessions were kept in store at a neighbor’s house which was lost to the fire.

More incaluably than the loss of the above, as the keeper of the Salter clan’s history, Jay lost generations’ worth of photos, letters, geneologies, jewelry, and momentos of his family’s Scottish, English and French heritage. Also lost were hundreds of hours of nature recording and decades of writing notebooks.

As most of you know, Jay has been a leading force for Celtic music in the Santa Cruz area since he first arrived here thirty years ago, and has worked tirelessly to bring Scottish piping to the locale. He has taught many people the pipes and low whistle here in private and group settings as well as in the unique piping program he established at Santa Cruz High School. His band, the Santa Cruz Pipes and Drums, has for decades performed for local events. He has also brought leading musicians into the area to give workshops and concerts to further the art of piping and, most importantly to him, to foster community.
In his evacuation from his RV home at Coastways Ranch, he was able to get most of his primary instruments, and his cats to safety. He has fortunately been able to return to his original site recently.
Many of us have enjoyed the fruits of Jay’s labor and artistry. I hope we can step up and give a little back to him now.
