Jasper (also known as Jazzy and Mr. Jazzypants) is my beloved big ginger cat. He’s loving, curious, and sometimes amazingly demanding! Last week, Jasper was diagnosed with diabetes. I opted to try a pill called Bexacat, hoping it would be the perfect solution—just one pill a day to control his diabetes. But after only two pills, Jasper developed a serious and rare reaction called euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis, which can be fatal. He was rushed to Dove Lewis and is now hospitalized, needing several days of intensive care to stabilize. It’s been a terrifying experience, but right now, it looks like he’s improving, and I’m holding onto hope.

The cost of Jasper’s ongoing hospitalization is overwhelming. My pet insurance will cover some of it, but the rest falls on me. I will not choose to end his life due to cost—I will continue to opt for care as long as a good outcome is possible. If Jasper survives, he will need insulin for the rest of his life, and that’s something I’m prepared to do as long as he’s by my side.
