Our world was turned upside down when Jasper was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just 21 months. He was acting like his normal, joyful self in the ambulance ride to Duke ER with his sugar at almost 800. Even during his 3 -day hospital stay, he managed to spread joy everywhere he went. He especially loved roaming the ICU floor in his little red wagon, IV pole rolling behind him, and coaxing the nurses to play soccer with him by kicking his ball outside the room and waiting patiently for someone to bring it back. Since coming home, our days have been filled with insulin pod changes, troubleshooting glucose meter alarms, and continuing to be amazed at the strength and resilience of this little human that we are so lucky to have in our lives. The scariest thing is putting him in his crib at night and worrying that his glucose meter alarms won't wake us up and that his blood sugar could drop dangerously low, or worrying about the many technological malfunctions that could disrupt his insulin from being delivered. Having a diabetes service dog in Jasper's life would give us a tremendous peace of mind and would help keep Jasper safe. These incredible dogs can alert us to a low or high blood sugar a full 20-40 minutes before his glucose meter and give us valuable time to give him insulin or sugar to prevent and major complications from this condition. If you're able, please donate to our fund, so that our little Jasper can be safer and happier as he navigates this new reality of living with Type 1.
