Hi everyone,

I never imagined I’d be writing something like this, but my dog Jasper has recently been diagnosed with two forms of cancer, and we’re trying to give him the best quality of life possible while keeping him comfortable and happy.

Jasper is a 12 year old German Shepherd mix who has been my best friend since a puppy. Despite everything, he is still himself, happy, funny, loving, always smiling, and eating normally.

Diagnosed tumors:

• A soft tissue sarcoma on his shoulder

• Anal gland carcinoma that has spread to nearby lymph nodes

After meeting with a veterinary oncologist, we learned that while his cancer is not curable, there are treatment options that may help slow progression and give him meaningful additional time with good quality of life.

So far, we’ve already spent thousands of dollars on biopsies, imaging, specialty consultations, medications, and diagnostic testing to determine the best treatment plan.

The recommended treatment is a medication called Palladia (toceranib), which helps control cancer growth and rupture of the tumor on his shoulder. Unfortunately, because Jasper is a large dog, the medication alone costs approximately $1,000 per month, in addition to ongoing monitoring, imaging, bloodwork, and supportive care.

We are trying to avoid putting Jasper through aggressive surgeries unless absolutely necessary, and focus on keeping him comfortable, active, and happy for as long as possible.

If you know Jasper, you know how gentle, funny, and loving he is. More than anything, he loves swimming in the ocean, meeting new people and dogs, and car rides. We have taken long road trips together through the years, and would love to continue taking him on adventures. He is even famous in the Midtown Miami neighborhood because of his unique personality and spunk. He purposely drags me to the stores on our walks to say hi to the employees, and they just love him.

He has gotten me through so many chapters of life, and now I’m trying to do the same for him.
