For nearly 30 years, the University of Detroit Mercy basketball games have been timed perfectly by one man: Jason Smith. He is a beloved fixture at the scorers' table, known for his commitment, kindness, and pride in his work. However, behind his unwavering presence, Jason has been enduring an unimaginable tragedy that has left him with nothing.
Earlier this year, in April, Jason’s home in Detroit was destroyed in a fire. His mother, who lived with him, tragically passed away in the fire. A local news report from FOX 2 Detroit documents the tragedy:
The fire stole not only his home and mother, but also his stability. In the chaos that followed, he no longer has a car. Now without transportation, he is forced to walk 30 minutes each way to his job and relies on multiple buses to get to the university for games. Most of his funds have been going towards hotel costs.
Jason is a proud man and has been keeping this struggle private. But it's clear he needs outside assistance. The weight of his grief and financial strain has taken a toll.
After nearly three decades of dedicated service to our university's athletic department, it is heartbreaking to see him in such dire circumstances.
We are coming together as a university and a community to show Jason that we are here for him. The first and most critical need is reliable transportation so he can get to work safely, especially with winter approaching. We also want to help him secure stable housing, help with meal costs, and restore his peace of mind.
How your donation can help:
Secure transportation: A new or reliable used vehicle will give Jason the independence he needs to get to his jobs safely and efficiently.
Establish stable housing: Funds will help cover deposits and initial costs for a new, permanent home, moving him out of his temporary hotel room.
Provide basic necessities: Donations will ensure Jason has money for food and can begin rebuilding his life.
Jason has given us 30 years of his time and dedication. Now, as he faces this unimaginable tragedy, it is our turn to support him. Please consider donating and sharing this campaign with your network. Let's give back to a man who has given so much to us. Thank you.
