On July 31st, a simple accident changed Jason’s life forever. What started as stepping on a nail quickly spiraled into a grueling five-month medical battle. Despite Jason’s persistence and multiple hospital visits, a series of complications and a rare diagnosis eventually led to a life-altering outcome.
A Long and painful fight from August through October, Jason was in and out of the hospital constantly.
He underwent:
• Six MRIs in six months to track a spreading infection.
• Multiple surgeries to debride (clean out) the wound.
• Dozens of rounds of aggressive antibiotics to fight off Staph and deep bone infections.
• Advanced treatments, including a wound vac and 5-day-a-week hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Despite every effort by Jason and his medical team, the wound would not heal. The infection was deeper and more aggressive than anyone anticipated, eventually leading to nerve damage and the loss of the heel bone.
The Diagnosis: Necrotizing Vasculitis
In December, Jason finally received an answer, but it was a devastating one. He was diagnosed with Necrotizing Vasculitis.
Essentially, Jason’s immune system began attacking his own blood vessels. These "pipes" that carry oxygen to his foot became so inflamed and swollen that they shut down entirely. This caused Coagulative Necrosis—meaning the tissue in his foot and ankle was starved of oxygen and began to die. By the time it was discovered, the damage had claimed two-thirds of his foot and half of his tibia bone.
The Decision: Life Over Limb
To stop the necrosis from spreading further up his body and to prevent life-threatening sepsis, Jason’s doctors had to make a "life-over-limb" decision. On December 13th, Jason underwent a below-knee amputation (BKA).
How You Can Help
Jason was discharged on December 15th and is now facing a new reality.
While the surgery saved his life, the road to recovery is long and incredibly expensive. We are raising funds to help Jason with:
1. Medical Bills: Covering the costs of five months of hospitalizations, surgeries, and specialized therapies.
2. A Prosthetic Leg: To give Jason his mobility and independence back. Prosthetics are a massive out-of-pocket expense that insurance often only partially covers.
3. Also, the bathroom needs to be modified so Jason can safely get in and out of there. The door way is too narrow and he cannot get through the doorway with his walker without it becoming unsafe. The remodel would also include hand bars, railing and a walk-in shower for Jason to easily and safely access the bathroom.
Jason has fought through months of severe pain and uncertainty with incredible strength. Now, he needs his community to rally behind him.
Any donation, no matter how small, will go directly toward his medical expenses and his journey toward walking again.
Please share this page and keep Jason in your thoughts as he begins his recovery.
BIG NEWS for Jason! We just hit a massive milestone: Jason has been officially discharged by the surgeon and is heading to Oakland Orthopedic to get fitted for his prosthetic leg!
We are so close to seeing Jason back on two feet. In as little as two weeks, he will be fitted for his preparatory prosthetic and can finally begin physical therapy!
While Medicaid is expected to cover future medical bills, it unfortunately does not cover the home modifications Jason needs to be independent.
The Goal: $3,000 for a safe, accessible bathroom.
️ The $3 Challenge: If 1,000 friends and family members give just $3, we hit this goal instantly!
Please consider donating the cost of a coffee or simply sharing this post to help Jason navigate this next chapter safely. Let's get his home ready for his new.
