My name is Steve Winters and I am a good friend of Jason Kuipers.
Jason has been fighting an incredibly difficult battle with his health since May 2024. It started with a flare-up of Crohn's colitis, and since then, his condition has worsened, keeping him in and out of the hospital for the last four months. In July, he faced his first extended hospital stay, and the challenges have only escalated. Jason was diagnosed with CMV, a viral infection that preys on those with weakened immune systems. This infection has added another layer of complexity to his already severe condition.
His treatment has been far from easy. Jason has endured multiple rounds of a hazardous antiviral medication called Ganciclovir, which requires intense administration due to its risks. He has experienced debilitating side effects, including paralyzing body aches, severe fevers, and constant pain. Despite switching to the oral form of the medication (Valganciclovir), the pain persists, particularly in the mornings when his joints feel like they’re on fire. While this treatment is essential in suppressing the virus, it comes with significant risks and does not guarantee success.
Jason's physical and financial challenges have compounded over the months. He has been unable to work since late June, and although his disability claim was finally approved, he is still waiting for back pay. Medical bills have piled up, and despite having insurance, the out-of-pocket costs for his treatments, medications, and potential surgeries are overwhelming. The next steps may include more rounds of the expensive antiviral drug, or even surgery, as the medical team continues to fight the virus and manage his Crohn's.
Jason and his fiance, Brenya, have been doing everything they can to stay afloat. Brenya has been working overtime, and they’ve received some help from family, but the expenses continue to grow. Jason is now looking into physical therapy to regain his strength, as the illness has left him barely able to stand without assistance.
This GoFundMe is to help Jason cover the rising medical costs and provide some financial relief as he continues to fight this battle. He still faces a long road to recovery, and any support—whether financial or by sharing his story—will make a tremendous difference.
Jason has shown incredible resilience through this painful and exhausting journey, but he can’t do it alone. Please consider donating to help him cover his medical expenses and regain his health. Every little bit helps, and Jason and Brenya are deeply grateful for your support during this challenging time.
Thank you.
