My name is Jennifer Hay, and I am asking for help for my husband, Jason, as we face a serious and life-changing medical condition. Jason has been diagnosed with Alpha-gal Syndrome, a severe allergy triggered by exposure to mammalian products. His testing confirmed a positive Alpha-gal IgE level of 1.93 kU/L. This condition is not just food-related — he can also have reactions from airborne exposure, including the smell of any freshly cooked beef, lamb, or pork. Over the past year, Jason’s health has declined to the point where he missed more than 100 days of work. Despite doing everything he could to keep going, he ultimately lost his job because he could no longer reliably show up due to unpredictable reactions and medical episodes.
What has made this even more difficult is that Jason cannot safely rely on normal food options. All food must be carefully sourced and prepared using safe ingredients. This makes travel for medical care extremely challenging, as there are no safe chain food options available to him. We now have a specialist appointment scheduled for June 10 at UNC Allergy and Immunology with Dr. Scott Commins, who is a leading researcher in Alpha-gal Syndrome. This will require out-of-state travel and careful planning to avoid exposure. Due to the severity of his condition, we are trying to secure a truck and RV to create a safe, controlled, and portable living environment. This would allow Jason to avoid exposure triggers, safely prepare all food, and travel for medical care without risking serious reactions.
We are asking for help to cover medical appointments and diagnostic testing, travel to out-of-state specialists, medications and emergency care, the cost of a truck and RV for safe, controlled housing, and basic living expenses during this time without stable income. Jason is a hard worker and a devoted husband who never expected to be in this position. Any support — whether through a donation or simply sharing this — would mean more than we can express. We do have medical documentation available, including confirmed Alpha-gal diagnosis and documented work impact. Thank you for standing with us during this time.
