Story:
My name is Jenna Curtis, and I’m reaching out to our community with hope and gratitude to support my ex-husband, Jason Benton, in his ongoing journey toward greater independence and quality of life.
On August 23, 2023, Jason suffered a sudden and life-altering spinal cord infection that caused complete paralysis. In the immediate aftermath, medical professionals delivered heartbreaking news: he might remain dependent on breathing machines indefinitely and regain no movement beyond turning his head side to side. The prognosis was devastating, yet Jason has defied the odds with extraordinary determination and resilience.
Over the past 2.5 years, through sheer grit and minimal formal support, Jason has made remarkable progress far beyond what doctors initially predicted. He has fought tirelessly every day, adapting to his new reality while refusing to let it define him. Unfortunately, his insurance has consistently denied coverage for any physical therapy, leaving us with no access to the specialized rehabilitation he needs to continue building on these gains.
Now, an incredible opportunity is right in our backyard. Jason is just 7 miles from The Perfect Step, a world-renowned paralysis recovery center in Southern California that attracts clients from across the globe. This state-of-the-art facility specializes in evidence-based, activity-focused therapy delivered by Certified Paralysis Recovery Specialists using their proprietary S.T.E.P. Method®. It offers hope for meaningful improvements in strength, function, and overall well-being for people living with paralysis—exactly the kind of targeted, expert care Jason deserves.
The challenge is that The Perfect Step is 100% out-of-pocket, with sessions priced at $130 per hour. To make consistent progress, Jason would benefit from 1–2 hours of therapy per week. While this is an investment in his future, it’s one we cannot afford alone.
We are humbly asking for your support—any amount, no matter how small, will make a tremendous difference. Every donation will go directly and exclusively toward funding Jason’s physical therapy sessions at The Perfect Step. There are no administrative fees or other uses; 100% of the funds raised will support his care.
Your generosity could help Jason continue defying expectations, regain more independence, reduce complications, and reclaim pieces of the life he loves. We’ve seen how far he’s come already—imagine what consistent, specialized therapy could unlock next.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for reading Jason’s story, for considering a donation, and for sharing this fundraiser with anyone who might be able to help. Together, we can give him the tools to take the next steps in his recovery.
With deepest appreciation,
Jenna Curtis
