Jasna worked tirelessly as a housekeeper at the White Sands Hotel, earning her way up to housekeeping supervisor through sheer grit and heart. But last night, everything changed. She received devastating news: her 34-year-old son, Matej, who still lives in Croatia, has been diagnosed with lymphatic cancer and needs to start chemotherapy immediately. With no other family there to support him, Jasna made the selfless decision to return to Croatia to care for Matej during his treatment and hopeful recovery. It’s what any loving mother would do—but it’s left her facing an impossible situation.

The home Jasna once had in Croatia was badly damaged in an earthquake a few years ago. While the brickwork and roof were recently repaired, the interior remains unliveable—no furniture, no bed, not even basic comforts for her or Matej as he fights this battle. Jasna has no savings, and neither the Croatian nor Irish governments will provide assistance since she’s been living here. With just enough money for a flight back, she’s leaving behind her job and the life she built here in Dublin to be by her son’s side. We don’t know how long she’ll need to stay, but we hope Matej recovers so she can return to her beloved granddaughter Nyla, who will miss her terribly.
