From the ER to the PhD: Help Jari get to Houston!

Hi, my name is Jari Bradley, and I am a Black genderqueer emerging writer who has recently been accepted into the University of Houston's Creative Writing Program, located in Houston, Texas. Just weeks ago I was admitted into the ER and hospitalized due to health issues exacerbated by the pandemic. Now, on this journey of recovery and relocation, I am seeking community support to help me reach my destination, the PhD program in Houston, so that I can benefit from the resources that await me there (renewed health care, community members, tuition assistance, etc).

I have been residing in Madison, Wisconsin on fellowship this past year and am in need of assistance relocating to Houston. There have been many unforeseen costs that have made it impossible for me to complete this move on my own financially. My personal funds are exceptionally low at this time, and without community support this move may not be possible.

It is not lost upon me how difficult these times are for everyone. I share the task among many others of having had to be resilient in the face of a lack of familial support, and a history of coming from limited financial means. I have worked hard to get to where I am today, and this opportunity to further my writing and study is one that I have fought for despite not always being financially stable. Any help toward me actualizing my ambitions as a writer and scholar is a much larger investment in my mission to give back to community with the skills I cultivate during this journey. I have been a professor, mentor, and have guest edited poetry journals all with the experience I have gained as a result of consistently pursuing my dream of writing. With your help, I will be able to continue this work that has sustained me and help me further develop my skills as a teacher and mentor.
