On August 19, 2020, Jared Leitenberger, a 22 year old recent psychology graduate of MSU, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia and his world turned upside down. He felt exhausted, bled easily, had a rapid heart rate, and nosebleeds. At the suggestion of his mom, Jared finally went to the doctor to have bloodwork done. The bloodwork, along with subsequent tests, revealed that he has has aplastic anemia. Aplastic anemia is very rare and is a condition where the bone marrow stops producing new blood cells.Jared was sent immediately to Oschner’s Medical Center in New Orleans, LA, because his platelet count was at zero, and after several blood transfusions those counts continued to flatten out. Jared has started a series of infusion treatments and several oral medications. Additionally, due to having to be monitored frequently, he has to live near Oschner’s Medical Center. Relocation from Florida to Long Beach, MS has been necessary. Jared will need to rent an apartment and travel often to New Orleans. He is unable to work due to his treatments and medical bills are climbing. Jared is enrolled as a graduate student at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale and will continue his classes online. He was enrolled previous to this earth shattering diagnosis.
Jared has such a bright future ahead of him as a psychologist, and we want to help him with medical bills, which are already well above $300K. He also needs funds to help pay for an apartment and living expenses. We’ve set a goal of $20,000 to help alleviate some of the costs to this young college student.
