"The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it" - Robert Swan

‼️ YOOOO I’M GOING TO SEE PENGUINS ‼️

Having been personally selected as one of only 90 participants, I plan to embark on a lifetime journey to the Antarctic with Robert Swan - one of history's greatest explorers and the first person to walk to both poles. The “Leadership on the Edge” expedition will take place over 12 days this March and has been organised by the 2041 Foundation in an effort to spread awareness about climate change, sustainability and energy use, and equip future leaders with the resources and actionable solutions necessary in the fight against global warming. Along with a better understanding of the continent’s fragile ecosystem thought several talks and workshops, I will experience its unique wildlife and observe the magnificent landscape of Antarctica, all in an aim to become a future Ambassador for Antarctica 2041 ClimateForce.

However, my beloved friends of trees, mountains and clean air, I need your support! Scroll down to find out more about me, my aim, the expedition and why I need you and how you can help me!First of all, who am I and why do I want to participate?
Hello there! I'm Janou, a 24-year old girl from tiny Luxembourg currently living and studying in Glasgow (UK). Having finished my undergraduate degree in Tourism Management last year, I am currently pursuing my MSc Environment and Sustainable Development, the topic I am probably most passionate about of them all! In my spare time there’s nothing more I love doing than being out and about, whether that is taking my pup on adventures to the Scottish Highlands or country parks around the city, going on runs, hikes and cycles, or just meet my friends in the park. I am passionate about travelling the world, always aiming to get as close to the locals as possible and get the most authentic experience.

Now here’s why I want to go on this mission. Everyone that knows me also knows that the impact environmental change has on the lives of numerous species concerns me deeply, and I am always making an active effort to educate the people in my immediate environment on simple ways to follow a more sustainable lifestyle. In an attempt to reduce my carbon footprint and emissions, I, myself, have drastically reduced my use of plastic, changed to a vegan diet, have been primarily buying second-hand or always made an effort to offset my carbon emissions from flights. However, after years of having adopted this more sustainable lifestyle, I realised that was simply not enough. My urge to participate in the fight against climate change is bigger than that and has inspired me to pursue a career path that will enable me to do it. I spend a lot of my time reading on environmental issues, watching relevant documentaries, and attending multiple sustainability events and conferences to hear the views of professionals of different backgrounds, all of which has spurred my enthusiasm to work on this field even further. Additionally, I have recently gotten involved as the marketing manager in my university’s society which works towards the Sustainable Development Goals (GU4SDG).  My overall professional goal consists of improving society’s understanding of sustainability, the negative impact certain actions have on the environment and how they hinder a sustainable development, as well as on how to apply this knowledge to better manage natural and socio-cultural resources in the long-term.

What am I hoping to achieve with this expedition?
The aim of this expedition is to equip leaders with the resources and solutions to make a change in this world. Therefore, I believe that this trip will help me gain and further develop crucial knowledge on steps that can and NEED to be taken to ensure preservation of our planet and its natural resources in the future. It is my goal to become a leader in the fight against climate change, and first-hand experiences like this trip will equip me with valuable skills that will enable me to do so. The skills needed for great leadership go far beyond any theoretical knowledge - one needs to be confident, fearless, honest, non-judgemental and, most importantly, determined. Seeing the disastrous effects of climate change with my own eyes will always have a significantly bigger effect on my determination to making a change than any speeches I hear, articles I read or documentaries I watch.

I am also hoping that the expedition will enable me to make some great connections with fellow nature enthusiasts, which will be valuable in my future career in the sustainability sector. Tackling any global issues regarding sustainable development, including environmental conservation, requires expertise from my different disciplines, be it economist, scientists or engineers. As I am aiming to work towards a sustainable future on an international level, such cross-country connections with people from different backgrounds will undoubtedly prove incredibly beneficial to unite nations in the goal.

But…why Antarctica?
I am sure that all of you have seen images and videos of massive pieces of ice breaking off icebergs. Antarctica is central to any discussion about anthropogenic climate change. The continent, a largely pristine wilderness that belongs to no country, is not only home to a wide range of fauna and marine species, but it also contains approximately 90% of Earth’s ice, and roughly 70% of our planet’s fresh water. For decades, the effects of climate change have been more and more visible in the Antarctic: glaciers and ice shelves such as the Larsen B melting and breaking off prematurely, sea ice disappearing, critically disrupted ecosystems and food chains, and more. If these patterns are allowed to continue unchecked, the resultant sea level rise alone in the next century would lead to catastrophic, absolutely unimaginable changes to our world, our coastal cities, and our populations.

This Expedition is an opportunity for participants to connect with and learn from the natural environments most affected by climate change, and to realise the urgent need for real-world solutions to address these issues. There is no better teacher than the immediacy of “being there”.

What is the 2041 ClimateForce Antarctic Expedition about?
As the world’s most dynamic Antarctic sea expedition, it is a unique 12-day educational journey by ship to ‘the Last Great Wilderness on Earth,’ led by polar explorer and sustainability champion Robert Swan. The carbon-negative expedition aims to inspire, develop, and train the next generation of leaders to promote a more sustainable future. The expedition has the most comprehensive on-board programming schedule of any Antarctic expedition. Aiming to help participants on their climate leadership journeys, the renowned ‘Leadership-On-The-Edge’ program, which has been perfected over two decades, consists of a blend of:
▸ Lessons and interactive Workshops led by renowned experts in their fields
▸ Climate Science Training and Sustainable Development Education
▸ Shore landings at key sites along the Antarctic Peninsula
▸ Studying and observing massive glaciers, icebergs and a wide range of Antarctic wildlife up close
▸ Small group discussions
▸ Team-building activities
All these activities will train me and other inspirational participants on up-to-date climate science, sustainability, and leadership skills and will equip us with the tools to create meaningful impacts in their communities, institutions, companies, and governments in order to benefit this planet that we all call home. The leaders on board will share their successes and failures in their own careers and journeys in order to help everyone see perspectives they may not have otherwise considered. The goal is that these ideas can be further built upon and replicated in different parts of the world, allowing for sharing and collaboration on technologies and other climate solutions.
Why do I need YOU?
Although slightly subsidised, the cost of this two-week mission is still quite significant. The base cost of the expedition itself will be $16,900, however with the airfare to and from Ushuaia (Argentina), travel insurance as well as the gear required to withstand the Antarctic weather conditions (which I’ll buy primarily secondhand’), the total cost will most likely be around $18,500. While hoping to pay for as much as I can out of pocket and try to find corporate sponsorships, I still need your help to enable me to cover part of the expedition and my mission to tackle climate change!
I am not someone to ask for help very often, but the time has finally come where I have to reach out to YOU to support me on my mission. Any tenner will bring me one step closer to my goal and you will forever have my tremendous gratitude <3

What’s in it for you?

By investing in me and my mission, you are investing in a sustainable future of our planet. We all know that the world and its natural resources needs to be protected at all cost, and it is through expeditions like these which enable leaders to learn more about the steps that need to be taken. Although, personally, I don’t have that much to offer as I'm artistically and musically very untalented, I have put together a few small incentives to say thank you for all your support.
If you and someone you know works for a company with an interest in sustainability and the fight against climate change, and thus keen on a corporate sponsorship, feel free to message me and I will forward you sponsoring packages!

Let's do this everyone!! Again, thank you so much for your support!!

Janou x
