On February 12, Janine Kelley — a devoted single mother — lost her home and nearly everything inside it in a devastating house fire. Janine does not have homeowners insurance due to a previous house fire, as well as damage from a past hurricane. She is now facing the overwhelming reality of starting completely over with no safety net. Her home is currently unlivable, most of her belongings are gone, and the road ahead feels uncertain.
This tragedy has been especially heartbreaking for her son, who had a deep passion for caring for snakes. He dedicated himself to learning about them, creating a safe environment, and caring for them with patience and love. Tragically, the fire took the lives of 15 of his 19 snakes. He describes the terror of returning home to thick black smoke, desperately trying to save them, and the deep grief of losing animals he loved like family. By sharing his story, he hopes other animal owners will take extra precautions to protect the creatures they care for.
In the aftermath of the fire, the family has also endured hurtful criticism and online bullying from people who judged his love for reptiles instead of offering compassion. Despite this cruelty, Janine and her son continue to show resilience, empathy, and strength. Their story is a reminder that kindness matters most when people are at their lowest.
Right now, Janine and her family are left with little more than each other and the generosity of those willing to help. Funds raised will go directly toward:
• Temporary housing and immediate living needs
• Replacing clothing, furniture, and household essentials
• Repairing the damage to her home so it can eventually be made safe to live in again
Because there is no insurance coverage, the majority of donations will go toward rebuilding and restoring the home itself. If you are a contractor or tradesperson willing to donate time, labor, or materials, your support would make an incredible difference and will be gratefully recognized.
Every donation, share, and act of kindness helps bring hope to this family as they begin the long process of rebuilding their home and their lives. Thank you for standing with Janine and her son during this difficult time.
