Most of 2026, Janell has been battling her third episode of a rare and extremely painful autoimmune skin condition called pyoderma gangrenosum, which is associated with her ulcerative colitis. Over the past several months, the ulcer on her leg has continued to progress despite ongoing treatment. The wound has now extended down to the muscle, making it incredibly painful and difficult for Janell to walk, stand, or carry out everyday activities. As a result, she has been unable to work, creating a significant financial hardship.

Because this condition requires specialized care, Janell regularly travels to Iowa City for appointments with her medical team. In addition to travel expenses, she must purchase costly wound care supplies. The wound requires very large bandages and dressings that must be changed multiple times each day, making the cost of keeping the wound clean and protected overwhelming.
