Help Jamiyah Teach in Seoul, South Korea

My name is Jamiyah Jackson, and I recently graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. In 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in South Korea. That experience changed my life — I fell in love with the culture, the history, and the warmth of the people. It was then that I knew I wanted to return, not just as a visitor, but as a teacher. I'm thrilled to share that I’ve secured a teaching position in Seoul, and now I’m reaching out for support to help make this dream a reality.

I grew up in Georgetown, South Carolina — a small town often overlooked, but full of talented and ambitious people. From a young age, I was determined to rise and represent my community proudly. I was a two-time Spelling Bee champion at Kensington Elementary, a regional finalist, the president of Future Business Leaders of America in high school, and I led my team to win a $10,000 award. I graduated in the top 10 of Georgetown High School’s Class of 2021.

Much of my drive comes from my upbringing. Growing up in a middle- to low-income household, I made a promise to myself: I would showcase the brilliance and determination that exists in places like Georgetown — places too often underestimated. Many see it as just a pass-through town, but if they stopped and spoke to the people here, especially the youth, they’d see how much passion and potential lives within us.

That’s why I chose to major in Elementary Education — to pour back into communities like mine and uplift the next generation of dreamers and doers. My goal is not just to teach, but to inspire. South Korea is the next step on that journey.

I plan to return to Georgetown one day, bringing back all the knowledge, experience, and global perspective I gain in Seoul. I want the children in my hometown to see someone who came from where they did and made an impact far beyond it. I want to show them that success isn’t defined by where you start, but by the courage you have to chase your dreams.

Right now, I need help covering the costs of my flight to Seoul, visa fees, and essential moving expenses as I prepare to start my new job by July 20th. These funds will allow me to settle in, secure the necessities I need for daily life, and focus fully on my students — helping Korean children grow in their love for the English language and discover their own voices in the world.

Achieving this dream means everything to me. It’s not just about teaching abroad — it’s about becoming the best educator I can be, connecting across cultures, and eventually bringing it all back home. Any support you can offer will bring me one step closer to making a difference in Seoul — and, ultimately, back in Georgetown.

Thank you for believing in me.
