I am writing in hopes that people will come together to help our dear friend Jamie. Many of us know Jamie as a friend, a mom of two boys, a special education para, a wife, and someone devoted to her faith, but there is another side of Jamie. For over 12 years, she has needed to be an insane fighter and has suffered daily from severe headaches. For years, she was told it was migraines and trusted that the doctors weren't wrong. She tried migraine medication and alternative therapies with no relief. It wasn’t until a brain MRI in 2020 revealed Chiari Malformation—a condition where the cerebellum is compressed and pushed into the spinal cord. Jamie underwent Chiari decompression surgery, but complications led to a cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) leak and a second surgery. Jamie’s symptoms never fully resolved. Not only did they not resolve, but they became more intense. The pain was slowly taking control of her life, causing an emotional, physical, and incredibly painful toll on her daily existence.
Determined to find relief, Jamie saw seven neurosurgeons across multiple states and spent countless hours and resources searching for answers. Jamie was so hopeful every time one of the specialists had a test or procedure they thought might give her answers or some relief. But after each one, she continued to suffer. Not only was she suffering, but she was declining. It was obvious something was really wrong that was being missed. Her social life had disappeared, and she hasn’t been able to be the mom and wife she once was. The physical pain was difficult enough, but the emotional toll of remaining positive and continuing to fight has been incredibly challenging. After years of being brushed off by doctors, many would have quit—but not Jamie! She kept trusting God and continued to tell herself, “only moving forward.” She trusted that if she kept moving forward, she would find help for her suffering.
Through the Bobby Jones CSF support group, she discovered the importance of critical imaging, such as rotational CT scans and upright MRI, that previous neurosurgeons had never ordered. Most neurosurgeons have no idea how crucial this type of imaging is. Jamie was learning that not all neurosurgeons are created equal and that many do not understand the complexity of Chiari, spine instability, and related conditions. Jamie also learned about Dr. Henderson, a pioneer in this field. She knew she had to get to him for a chance to get her life back.
Jamie recently traveled to Maryland to meet with Dr. Henderson. From the moment she stepped into his office, it was evident he was different from any other surgeon she had seen. He spent so much time listening, reviewing imaging, and completing a physical exam that revealed tremors, dystonia, and many other abnormal findings. Jamie was finally in the hands of a doctor who could put all her puzzle pieces together and figure out why she was suffering so badly. She was given hope that she could get relief from suffering and regain her quality of life.
The Problem
Dr. Henderson revealed that Jamie needs her Chiari decompression surgery redone because not enough of the skull was removed during her first surgery, leaving the cerebellum still compressed. This is putting pressure on her brainstem in the back of her head and blocking her cerebral spinal fluid (CSF).
Dr. Henderson also took many precise measurements from Jamie’s imaging. The new images show that her skull is moving more than it should because her ligaments aren’t strong enough to hold her neck up, resulting in her skull sliding down into her spine. This is causing compression on the front of her brainstem and compromising the flow of CSF in the front.
Because of this combination of spinal instability and Chiari, Jamie’s brainstem is being compressed from both the front and back. It is important to mention that the brainstem controls vital functions—it tells your heart to beat and your lungs to breathe. All messages from the brain run through the brainstem. With CSF flow compromised, Jamie’s head is like a giant pressure cooker.
The Solution
Craniocervical Fusion
- Dr. Henderson proposed that he can fix Jamie’s anatomy by lifting her skull off her spine, repositioning it, and fusing her skull to the top two vertebrae.
Redo of Chiari Decompression
- Remove more of the skull to make room for the cerebellum.
The combination of these surgeries will also restore Jamie’s CSF flow, relieving the pressure in her head.
Now Jamie is left with a choice:
1. Continue to suffer and decline as she loses more of her abilities.
2. Take the next step with surgery to get her life back.
It is no surprise that Jamie has trusted God to bring her this far to Dr. Henderson for a reason. She is choosing to take the next step. I know the physical and emotional toll this has taken on her and her family, and I am amazed by her strength. There is no one more deserving than Jamie to receive help as she continues to trust God and move forward one more time. Please help her fight with me!
Jamie has held on to Psalm 127:1 throughout this journey:
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.”
We believe that if God is making a way for this surgery, He will provide what is needed. We have already seen Him at work through friends who have helped with flights, housing, and the cost of critical imaging.
How We Can Help
While the hospital portion of surgery is covered by insurance, Dr. Henderson is not, as he is in private practice and does not participate in insurance. The out-of-pocket cost for Jamie to have Dr. Henderson perform this surgery on June 10, 2025, is $27,000 upfront. Additionally, there will be costs for:
- Airfare
- Transportation while there
- Lodging and meals for one week after surgery (as she must remain in the area for her post-op visit)
Jamie has fought so hard for answers, and now she finally has them. This surgery is her chance to get her life back. Please consider donating to help Jamie afford this critical surgery. Every dollar makes a difference, and if you can’t give financially, your prayers and shares mean the world.
Let’s come together and help Jamie get the care she needs!
“Only moving forward.”
